Round 8 in the Futsal Premier League 2 Open Women’s competition was another fantastic edition which had plenty of high-octane action. Our Match of the Round saw Raiders Futsal Club host Sydney Futsal Club in a top four clash.

Match of the Round: Raiders Futsal Club 3 drew with Sydney Futsal Club 3

Points were shared in a 3-3 draw between Raiders Futsal Club and Sydney Futsal Club at Thomas Hassell Anglican College on Saturday afternoon.

Raiders Futsal Club battled hard for the point. Amelia Savette gave them a 1-0 lead at the break after her 20th minute goal. Nicole Ossio then restored a 2-1 lead in the 29th minute before Gemma Bartolillo struck in the 38th minute for a 3-3 draw.

Sydney Futsal Club had a strong second half which helped them to earn something from this contest. Charlotte Heath leveled in the 25th minute for 1-1 then Cynthia Coghlan scored to make it 2-2 in the 33rd minute. Abbey Harrison tapped home to make it 3-2 in the 36th minute before they were pegged back.

Raiders Futsal Club opened the game in fast fashion. Gemma Bartolillo flashed an effort wide of the post.

The visitors held much of the sway in the opening stages. Liana Calabro had an effort blocked then Cynthia Coghlan was denied twice.

Sydney Futsal Club kept the pace going looking for the opener. Charlotte Heath tried to poke home then Mya Callil whistled a shot past the post.

They weren’t able to find a way past Raiders Futsal Club keeper Jasmine Crouch in the first half as she denied Coghlan and Naomi Nguyen late.

Raiders Futsal Club delivered a late sucker punch for 1-0 in the 20th minute. Amelia Savetta rolled down pitch on the break and fired home.

The game kept the same pattern in the second half. Calabro drove one right at Crouch then she almost deflected one home.

Raiders Futsal Club were opportunistic with their chances. Savetta was the outlet again but drove the effort past the post.

Sydney Futsal Club drew level in the 25th minute. Heath found space and fired home to confirm their dominance and make it 1-1.

The visitors pushed to take the lead for the first time. They fizzed the ball around before Callil was denied.

Raiders Futsal Club made it 2-1 in the 29th minute. Savetta muscled off a defender then rolled it to Nicole Ossio to finish.

Savetta was the fulcrum of the Raiders Futsal Club attack and went close again but Sydney Futsal Club custodian Natalie Milenkovski stood tall.

Coghlan then equalized for Sydney Futsal Club in the 33rd minute. She snatched the ball from a defender and rolled it home for 2-2.

Sydney Futsal Club went inches from taking the lead soon after. Nguyen had a chance cleared off the line then Heath rattled the post.

Raiders Futsal Club prised open the Sydney Futsal Club defence and Angelina Powell was blocked at the near post by Milenkovski.

The visitors took their first lead of the game in the 36th minute. It was a set piece from the kick-in which saw Abbey Harrison tap home for 3-2.

Nguyen was to hit the post for Sydney Futsal Club in the dying stages of the game which might have confirmed three points for the visitors.

Raiders Futsal Club profited from their miss to make it 3-3. Bartolillo and Savetta combined for the former to fire home in the 38th minute.

The hosts had a pair of chances to snatch the win. Ossio was denied at close range then she had a fierce effort that Milenkovski tipped over as the teams shared the points.

Post match, Raiders Futsal Club coach John Ossio reflected on the game and his team’s defensive work:

“We knew it would be a tough game between two top sides. They brought their game but our defense held firm and were well structured. We worked on blocking shots all week for this game.” said Ossio.

Sydney Futsal Club coach John Jiggins reflected on the missed opportunities for the side in this contest:

“It was a good contest between two good sides. We dominated the first half and probably should’ve finished off the game. We need to work on being strong in defence but we’re getting stronger as the season goes.” said Jiggins.

APIA FC Futsal 3 defeated by SD Raiders Futsal 6

Leaders SD Raiders Futsal won 6-3 against APIA FC Futsal down at Valentine Sports Park on Saturday afternoon.

SD Raiders Futsal maintained their perfect start to the Futsal Premier League 2 season with another comfortable win. Abigail Boag opened the scoring in the 3rd minute for 1-0 then Layne Knight made it 2-0 in the 7th minute.

APIA FC Futsal pegged them back in quick fashion. Lexi Modena pulled it back to 2-1 in the 14th minute then Alice Bowles made it 2-2 in the 15th minute. Miriam Zumaya gave SD Raiders Futsal the lead back in the 15th minute for 3-2.

It was a Knight to remember for Layne who made it 4-2 in the 22nd minute before Bowles brought it back to 4-3 in the 25th minute. Knight completed her hat-trick in 34th minute for 5-3 then added a fourth in the 37th minute for 6-3 and seven games unbeaten for the visitors.

Phoenix Futsal Club 3 defeated by West City Crusaders 4

West City Crusaders won 4-3 against Phoenix Futsal Club in their game at The Centre – Dural on Saturday afternoon.

It was a game that proved the old saying “game of two halves” right as both teams had their moments in the game. Phoenix Futsal Club authored a fast start with a pair of goals in the opening two minutes.

Georgina Sarkissian scored a brace in 120 seconds which made it 2-0 for Phoenix Futsal Club and doubled her tally to four goals for the season. An own goal in the 20th minute made it 3-0 for the hosts at the break.

Crusaders changed up their tactics in the second half and it proved decisive in picking up a vital three points. Paris Vinuya made it 3-1 in 24th minute then Charlotte Owen pegged it back to 3-2 in the 30th minute before scoring her second for 3-3 in the 35th minute. Vinuya completed the turnaround in the 37th minute for 4-3.
