A major night of football and community spirit is set to unfold this Friday, 17 April, as Blacktown Spartans take on Prospect United in a highly anticipated Football NSW League One Men’s local derby.

The match, kicking off at 8:15pm at Blacktown Football Park, has been officially dubbed the Vella Cup, transforming what is already a fierce on-field rivalry into a powerful show of unity off it.

At the heart of the event is a cause close to the community: raising funds and awareness for Hayley Vella, a young member of the Prospect United family currently battling leukaemia.

Hayley’s connection to the club runs deep. Her father, Brian Vella, is the current coach of Prospect United and a long-standing figure within the club, widely regarded as one of its pillars. Alongside her mother, Caroline Vella, the family has devoted more than two decades to the club and the broader football community.

Hayley and her sister Ashleigh grew up on the sidelines of William Lawson Park—the home ground of Prospect United—making the club not just a team, but an extension of their family.

Now, the community is coming together to give back.

During the First Grade fixture, fundraising efforts will take place to support Hayley and her family during this incredibly challenging time.

Supporters, players, and local residents are being encouraged to attend, donate if they can, and stand in solidarity.

The message from the club is simple: this is about more than football.

It’s about showing what the football community stands for—support, unity, and heart.

Fans are urged to fill the sidelines, wear their colours proudly, and rally behind one of their own in a night that promises to be as meaningful as it is competitive.

For those unable to attend but wishing to contribute, donations can be made via the family’s GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/fbb62549b

As the Vella Cup kicks off under the Friday night lights, the result on the scoreboard may matter, but the true victory will be the strength of a community standing together.
