Round 8 Preview – League One Women’s
Round 8 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition promises a big weekend of action that could shake up the current standings as we head into the third month of the season.
There are six matches on the slate, including a blockbuster Match of the Round between leaders Newcastle Jets FC and fourth-placed South Coast Flame FC.
Let’s dive into the preview.
Match of the Round: South Coast Flame FC vs Newcastle Jets FC
Saturday 18 April, 3pm, Sir Ian McLennan Oval
South Coast Flame FC host league leaders Newcastle Jets FC in a pivotal clash at Sir Ian McLennan Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Flame come into this encounter well-rested after the bye last weekend. In attack, Shaylee Meehan has led the line strongly, with her pace expected to play a key role in breaking down the Jets’ defence.
At the other end, goalkeeper Sophie Emery has been a steady presence since arriving in the off-season and will need to be at her best once again.
Newcastle Jets FC extended their lead at the top of the table to three points following a dominant 6–1 win over Blacktown City FC last weekend. Makayla Clifton now leads the Golden Boot race with 12 goals and will be eager to add to her tally.
She is well supported by Hope Cleur, who grabbed a brace in that emphatic victory, highlighting the depth of the Jets’ attacking firepower.
This match will be streamed LIVE on the Football NSW YouTube channel, with Poletti on commentary for what shapes as a top-four showdown.
SD Raiders FC vs Bankstown City Lions FC
Sunday 19 April, 3pm, Ernie Smith Reserve
SD Raiders FC take on Bankstown City Lions FC at Ernie Smith Reserve on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders bounced back strongly last weekend with a 2–0 win over Nepean FC at Jamison Park. Aoife Horgan was on the scoresheet, underlining her importance to this young and developing side.
Bankstown City Lions FC, meanwhile, come into the match full of confidence after a thrilling 4–3 win over Central Coast Mariners FC in last week’s Match of the Round.
Karen Bennett continues to lead the line impressively, already surpassing her goal tally from last season. Natalie Moujalli remains a key figure, providing leadership and drive as the Lions look to build momentum.
Camden Tigers FC vs Central Coast Mariners FC
Sunday 19 April, 5pm, Ron Dine Reserve
Camden Tigers FC host Central Coast Mariners FC in what shapes as an entertaining clash.
The Tigers secured a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Sutherland Strikers FC last weekend. Defender Chloe Hain popped up with a late equaliser, showcasing her ability to contribute at both ends.
Goalkeeper Samantha Fulwood was outstanding, producing several key saves to keep her side in the contest and may again be called upon this weekend.
The Mariners will be looking to respond after a narrow 4–3 loss to Bankstown City. Ava Moller was a standout, registering a goal and an assist, while Anabel Goodman impressed with her presence up front, including a well-taken header.
Marconi Stallions FC vs St George FC
Sunday 19 April, 5pm, Marconi Stadium #2
Marconi Stallions FC take on St George FC at Marconi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Stallions are building momentum, recording a 4–2 win over Inter Lions FC last weekend. Hannah Voloder starred with a brace and continues to grow into a key attacking role.
With three consecutive wins, Marconi are mounting a push towards the top four, and another victory here could see them break into those positions.
St George FC fought back to earn a 2–2 draw against Blacktown Spartans FC last weekend. It’s been a challenging start to the season, with coach Mark Greenfield keen for his side to find consistency.
Kyla Vanderlaan made her first start of the campaign and could provide the spark needed as the Saints look to climb the table.
Blacktown City FC vs Sutherland Strikers FC
Sunday 19 April, 5pm, Landen Stadium
Blacktown City FC host Sutherland Strikers FC at Landen Stadium.
The hosts are coming off a tough 6–1 defeat to Newcastle Jets FC. Layla Hamdan scored their only goal and has been a bright spot in attack this season.
The return of Isabella Rodrique to the starting side could provide a boost as they look to bounce back.
Sutherland Strikers FC were held to a 1–1 draw by Camden Tigers last weekend. Matilda McParland impressed on her first start, opening the scoring and showing promising signs.
Alongside Eleonora Daga and Ella Morris, the Strikers boast a dangerous attacking trio capable of causing problems.
Inter Lions FC vs Nepean FC
Sunday 19 April, 7pm, Majors Bay Reserve
Inter Lions FC close out the round against Nepean FC on Sunday night.
Despite a 4–2 loss to Marconi last weekend, Inter showed plenty of fight. Cate Gyzen found the scoresheet, and her link-up play within the front three remains crucial to their attacking structure.
Coach John Di Biase will be hoping his side can be more clinical in key moments as they chase a positive result.
Nepean FC, meanwhile, suffered a 2–0 defeat to SD Raiders FC but remain well-placed in third on the ladder. Hannah Plaatjes continues to provide valuable experience, having featured consistently throughout the season.
Captain Tiana-Louise Barton is another key influence, particularly with her presence at set pieces.
Blacktown Spartans FC have the bye.
