Round 10 Review – League One Women’s
Round 10 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition saw a weekend of plenty of goals and action, which saw our last undefeated side fall.
There were six games to examine across the weekend, headlined by the Match of the Round between St George FC and Inter Lions FC. Let’s get into the review!
Match of the Round: St George FC 1–1 Inter Lions FC
St George FC and Inter Lions FC played out a 1-1 draw at Barton Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints were cruelled late and were unable to build on their first win of the season. Janan Codmani gave them the lead in the 75th minute before they were pegged back late by the relentless Lions.
Inter Lions FC felt like they left two points out on the field. They had the best chances in the game and were finally able to break through in the 88th minute through substitute Alyssa Walsh to make it 1-1.
Inter Lions FC created the first chance of the game. Georgina Sarkissian found space out wide and thrashed an effort over.
St George FC responded with their own chance, as Janan Codmani whipped an effort wide of the left post.
Cate Gyzen was the main attacking figure for the Lions. She worked a combination well with Ava Papangelis, with the latter shooting straight at St George FC keeper Stephanie Grimbilos.
The visitors were on the front foot in the first half. Gyzen had a pair of chances which went wide of the mark, the best of which came in the 15th minute.
Jordan Baker tried to stamp her authority on the contest, firing an effort straight at Inter Lions FC custodian Anna Ivanovic.
Baker then tried her luck from a set piece, curling it over the wall, but a diving Ivanovic was on hand to push it wide.
St George FC began to find their rhythm in the open contest. Tayla Cvetkovski and Caitlin Webster both had chances from range.
Hannah Charak went closest in the first half, striking the post with a low shot before it bounced away.
The visitors picked up where they left off in the second half. They had a few half chances, including Gyzen poking a shot from a corner wide.
Inter Lions FC’s two substitutes combined when Kiara Coscia crossed into the path of Alyssa Walsh, who fizzed her shot just past the post in the 60th minute.
Baker looked certain to open the scoring in the 65th minute for St George FC. She weaved through the Inter defence, but Ivanovic clawed her effort away.
Inter Lions FC had several chances in a goalmouth scramble, but the Saints defence cleared the danger.
St George FC broke the deadlock in the 75th minute. Janan Codmani bent an effort into the top corner to make it 1-0.
The visitors pushed forward and equalised in the 88th minute. It fell to substitute Walsh at the far post, and she tapped home for 1-1.
Inter Lions FC had a chance to take the lead in stoppage time. Coscia stood over a free kick and thumped it over the bar.
Codmani almost produced a spectacular match-winner, spotting the Inter keeper off her line and attempting to chip her, but Ivanovic backpedalled to push it wide.
There was one final twist, with Heba El Saddik digging out a cross that found fellow substitute Jenny Hughes, who headed wide.
Both sides settled for a point in an engrossing contest at Barton Park on Sunday evening.
Post-match, St George FC coach Mark Greenfield reflected on a game which told the story of their season:
“It was frustrating, we weren’t doing the simple things. We created enough opportunities and couldn’t score. No luck currently alongside the injuries and now we look to work our way out of this,” said Greenfield.
Inter Lions FC coach John Di Biase reflected on a game his side may see as two points dropped:
“When you don’t put the ball in the back of the net, this happens and I think it was two points dropped for us. We pushed [Billie] Anderson-Sharp up front alongside [Alyssa] Walsh, who scored and we’re quite proud of her,” said Di Biase.
