Hristodoulou ready to lead UNSW FC into historic Sapphire Cup Final
UNSW FC captain Angelique Hristodoulou says her side is ready to embrace the occasion as they prepare for their first-ever Sapphire Cup Final against Manly United FC next Wednesday night at Valentine Sports Park.
UNSW FC booked their place in the 2026 decider after a strong semi-final campaign, setting up a historic clash at Football NSW headquarters where both clubs will chase their maiden Sapphire Cup title.
For Hristodoulou, the achievement reflects the collective effort across the entire club.
“Reaching the Sapphire Cup Final is a massive achievement for everyone involved at UNSW FC,” she said.
“The club has been incredibly supportive throughout our campaign and we’re proud to represent them. To win it would be a special reward for all the hard work the players, coaches and staff have put in throughout the season.”
She said the group is relishing the opportunity to compete on one of the biggest stages in the competition.
“Not everyone gets the opportunity to play in a cup final, so we’re excited to embrace the occasion and give it everything we’ve got.”
Looking ahead to the final, Hristodoulou acknowledged the challenge posed by Manly United but emphasised UNSW’s focus on their own approach.
“Manly are always a quality side and we know they’ll be a tough challenge,” she said.
“That said, our main focus is on ourselves and playing the brand of football that has brought us success so far. When we’re at our best, we back ourselves against anyone and that’s where our attention will be heading into the final.”
UNSW have enjoyed a strong season to date, and Hristodoulou believes consistency in their processes will be key on Cup Final day.
“We’ve had a strong first half of the season and put ourselves in a good position, but our focus is firmly on what’s ahead,” she said.
“We’re approaching the final the same way we approach every game. We won’t be changing anything. We will stick to the processes and habits that have worked for us week in, week out.”
Hristodoulou also highlighted the significant growth of the UNSW women’s program during her time at the club, crediting the wider environment for its rise.
“The growth has been incredible,” she said.
“When I first arrived, the focus was often on avoiding relegation and staying in the competition. Now, UNSW is a genuine force across all age groups.
“We’re currently challenging for the Club Championship title, which reflects the strength of the entire program. Our First Grade squad reached the finals last season and is pushing hard to go even further this year.
“It’s a credit to everyone at the club who has invested in women’s football and helped build the culture and standards we have today.”
Finally, the UNSW skipper delivered a message to supporters ahead of the club’s historic night at Valentine Sports Park.
“Get down to Valentine Sports Park and get behind us,” she said.
“Your support means everything and gives us an extra lift when we’re out on the pitch. We can’t wait to see plenty of yellow and black in the stands.”
