Female Football Week launched
Football NSW has launched its inaugural Female Football Week – a national initiative being delivered by FFA and all State Member Federations to coincide with International Women’s Day.
The week will run from March 5-13, and has been developed to celebrate and promote opportunities available to girls/women to participate in football.
It also provides an opportunity for football stakeholders to celebrate the immense growth of the women’s game and recognise existing players, coaches’ referees and administrators responsible for this success.
With female football on the rise there is no better time to promote and celebrate International Women’s Day, female players, female coaches, female referees, female administrators the Westfield Matildas and Westfield W-League and the male Champions of women’s football.
Part of the week will also see former Matildas star and current Westfield W-League commentator Sally Shipard take charge at the up and coming Riverina Regional Roadshow delivering female football activations.
Football NSW Game Development Officer for Women’s Football and Sydney FC player Renee Rollason was refreshed to have received such overwhelming support from all Football NSW Associations, hosting Female Football Week initiatives.
“It has been great to be able to support local initiatives that provide local players with not only an introduction to the world game but also an ongoing football opportunity.”
As clubs and Associations eagerly prepare for the 2016 winter football season with the Play Football registration campaign in full swing, it’s exciting to reflect on the 2015 participation numbers which saw female players represent 22% of the total outdoor participants, 27% of the Summer Football players, 11% of registered coaches and 11% of referees.
“With female players from 5 to 70 years old enjoying our great game in 2015, the success of the Westfield Matildas at the 2015 FIFA Wold Cup and again during their current Olympic Qualifying campaign, coupled with football overtaking netball as the sport of choice for girls, it is an extremely exciting time for women’s football,” pointed out Hayley Todd, Head of Women’s and Schools Football at Football NSW.
