Football NSW Child Protection Training Requirements

Football NSW is committed to the safety and welfare of all children and young people in football.

Meeting Football NSW Requirements

To meet FNSW child protection training requirements, all registered team officials in the competitions listed below must have completed the following Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) online training courses:

  1. SIA – Safeguarding Children & Young People in Sport Induction course, and
  2. SIA – PBTR Harassment & Discrimination course.

There are no exemptions or recognition of prior learning.

APPLICABLE COMPETITIONS

The FNSW child protection training requirements apply to all Technical Directors, Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Managers registering for the following competitions:

  • NPL Men’s NSW
  • FNSW League One Men’s
  • FNSW League Two Men’s
  • FNSW Boys Youth League One
  • FNSW Boys Youth League Two
  • FNSW Boys Youth League Three
  • NPL Women’s NSW
  • FNSW League One Women’s
  • FNSW Girls Youth League One
  • FNSW Girls Youth League Two
  • FNSW Association Youth League
  • FNSW Skill Acquisition Program (SAP)
  • FNSW Girl’s Skill Acquisition Program (Girl’s SAP)
  • FNSW Futsal Premier League
  • FNSW Futsal Premier League 2
  • FNSW AWD Futsal League

These training requirements apply to all team officials working or volunteering with children.

These requirements do not apply to emergency services personnel in the course of performing their duties.

If you have completed both courses previously

If your SIA Certificate showing completion of both courses was uploaded to FNSW in 2025, you are not required to upload your SIA Certificate again in 2026.

If you did not upload your SIA Certificate in 2025, you are required to upload your SIA Certificate (Training History Summary) in 2026 showing completion of:

  • Safeguarding Children & Young People in Sport Induction course, and
  • PBTR Harassment & Discrimination course.

To download and check your SIA Certificate

  1. Log into the Sport Integrity Australia  e-learning website – SIA EDGE
  2. Go to LOGIN using your SIA username & password.
  3. Once logged into your SIA EDGE profile page select MY CERTIFICATE to view your SIA Training History Summary certificate.
  4. Check your training history summary on the SIA Certificate to ensure that the two courses are listed under My Completions.
  5. Download the SIA Certificate to your computer, and save it to your computer.

If a SIA Certificate has not been uploaded in 2025 or 2026 showing completion of both courses, you are required to complete the courses as follows:

How to Complete the training courses

The two training courses provided by Sport Integrity Australia are free and each course takes approx. 20-30 minutes to complete online.

  1. Log into the Sport Integrity Australia e-learning website – SIA EDGE
  2. LOGIN or REGISTER for Sport Integrity Australia using either your SIA username & password
  3. Once on your SIA EDGE profile page – select ‘Course Catalogue
  4. Search the courses and select and complete the following two courses:
    • Safeguarding Children and Young People in Sport Induction, and
    • PBTR – Harassment & Discrimination
  5. Once the first course is completed, select and complete the second course.
  6. Once both courses are completed, return to ‘Home‘ and select ‘MY CERTIFICATE’ to view your SIA Certificate (Training History Summary).
  7. On Page 2 of the Certificate, check and ensure that the two courses are listed under My Completions.
  8. Download the SIA Certificate to your computer, and save it to your computer.
  9. Submit your SIA Certificate to Football NSW.

CERTIFICATES ARE UPLOADED TO FOOTBALL NSW HERE

If a SIA Certificate is not received by FNSW showing completion of the two courses, you will need to complete the courses.

Team Official Approval

  1. Football NSW will only approve your position and registration as a team official in a FNSW Competition once:
    1. Certification for both courses has been received
    2. Your coaching qualifications have been verified
    3. You have correctly registered in “Play Football” (the national registration database)
    4. You have uploaded your Working with Children Check (WWC Number) into Play Football.   (Note only coaches who are coaching teams comprising of players who are all aged 18 years and over can request and exemption from the Play Football WWC requirements. You must state in your exemption request:  Name of Club, your role and the reason for exemption i.e. All players are over 18.   If this information and a satisfactory reason for a WWC exemption is not submitted, the exemption will be declined.
  2. A Team Official is not permitted in the Technical Area of a match without unless they have met the appropriate registration and WWCC requirements of Football NSW, and Play Football WWCC requirements of Football Australia.
  3. Any person found in the technical area who is unregistered, does not hold a WWC Number (if players are under 18) or is not approved by FNSW, can be subject to disciplinary action by FNSW.

Working with Children Check

The WWCC is a requirement applicable to all workers and volunteers who are working or volunteering with children under 18 years of age. Refer to the FNSW WWC Policy and FNSW WWCC webpage for further information.

All team officials, including Technical Directors, who work or volunteer with players aged under 18 years of age in a FNSW competition:

  1. MUST be currently registered in the national registration database Play Football.
  2. MUST have uploaded a current and valid Working with Children Check (WWC Number) into Play Football.
  3. MUST have had their WWC Number cited and approved to complete their registration process. (Note only coaches who are coaching teams which only contain players aged 18 years and over can request a WWC exemption in Play Football.  If your team comprises mostly of players aged 18 years and over, but players aged under 18 will be playing up into the team from time to time, then all team officials for that team must all hold and upload a valid WWC Number in Play Football.
  4. If you are only working or volunteering with players aged 18 years and over and are exempt from the WWC requirements, when registering in Play Football you must state in your exemption request:  Name of Club, your role, and reason for exemption i.e. All players are aged 18 years and over.  If this information and a satisfactory reason for a WWC exemption is not submitted, the exemption will be declined.

Yes, the SIA Certificate is now your Training History Summary certificate.    On page 2 of your SIA certificate will be listed all of your completed courses including Course name, Enrolment date, Start and Finish dates and current Status.

The completion of these courses is mandatory for officials registering for the FNSW competitions as listed. There are no exemptions or recognition of prior learning.

Under these requirements, the term ‘team official’ includes but is not limited to technical director, coach, manager, trainer, physiotherapist, first aider, Doctor or any other official required to be registered to enter the technical area or playing pitch.

These requirements do not apply to NSW Ambulance officers, NSW Fire Brigade, NSW Police, SES or other emergency service personnel in the course of performing their duties.

To locate and check your SIA Certificate

  1. Log into the Sport Integrity Australia  e-learning website – SIA EDGE
  2. Go to LOGIN using your SIA username & password.
  3. Once logged into your SIA EDGE profile page select ‘MY CERTIFICATE’ to view your SIA certificate which lists your Training History Summary.
  4. Check your training history summary on the SIA Certificate to ensure that the two courses are listed under My Completions.
  5. Download the SIA Certificate to your computer, and save it to your computer.

The two SIA online training courses required by FNSW no longer have an expiry date.  The courses however are subject to regular updates and therefore FNSW may require new completion of the courses from time to time.

No, the FNSW Child Protection training course requirements are not part of the Working with Children Check (WWCC).  The WWCC is a legal requirement of the NSW State Government and is a separate requirement.

Yes. Every person within FNSW working in a paid or volunteer role with children under 18 years of age is required to have a Working with Children Check. (except for people who are under 18 years of age themselves).

 

You must provide your WWC Number to your club. You must also keep your WWC on file as it will be required whenever you apply to work or volunteer with children.

Football NSW requires the following persons aged over 18 years to obtain a WWC Number and provide it the club, association, branch or referee’s branch they are applying to work or volunteer with:

  • All persons who are in a role working or volunteering with children under 18 years.
  • All coaches and managers working or volunteering with children under 18 years.
  • All technical directors working or volunteering with children under 18 years.
  • All referees, referee coaches and referee mentors (except those U18 years of age).
  • All administrators working or volunteering in a club that has participants U18 years.
  • All persons working or volunteering in a club who has access to the Registration Details or Database or personal details of participants or members U18 years.
  • All Directors and Committee Members of clubs etc. with participants aged U18 yrs.
  • All Member Protection Information Officers (MPIOs).
  • All persons working or volunteering at a camp, tour or event which involves an overnight stay or overnight accommodation (of one night or more) with children under 18 years.  Includes overnight accommodation in motels, hotels, cabins, camping, group accommodation or overnight air travel, train travel or bus travel.
  • All persons in any other child related roles in football working or volunteering with children U18 years.
