Demons do the double over the Stallions
Ironically, the Stallions were undefeated since Round 7 and the last team to beat them was Blacktown.
Such are the swings and roundabouts of the TeleChoice Premier League.
After the game a rather upbeat Ken Schembri, coach of the Blacktown City Demons, spoke about the missed chances of both sides.
?There were a lot of goalmouth incidents and there could have been quite a number of goals, but in the end there was only one goal,? he said.
?I think we have played a lot better than that and lost this year so, having said that, we?ll take this win.
?We were steady tonight and it?s obviously pleasing to win. We are going to fight hard to get off the bottom and avoid the wooden spoon because that?s our aim.
?Both teams were under-strength and it was a battle out there that certainly wasn?t for the football purists.?
Meanwhile, Schembri?s counterpart David Barrett of Marconi was most displeased about certain aspects of his side?s play and, as always, he was very forthright in his post-match comments.
?We had two or three one-on-ones and that?s the third own-goal we have scored in about four weeks, but overall I thought it was a fairly poor game,? he said.
?I am massively disappointed; even though we had players out tonight, there are no excuses. We were just not good enough and I actually think that Blacktown wanted the win more than us.?
In the 11?minute a Blacktown corner was headed just wide by Bruno Salas, but Marconi?s reply a few minutes later by Stefan Donevski, after receiving a brilliant cross from Matthew Gordon, forced Ivan Necevski into an excellent save. Necevski was arguably the best player on the field.
In the 23? minute a golden chance fell to the Stallions when Tolgay Ozbey, against his former club, superbly rounded Necevski but his shot was somehow brilliantly saved off the goal line by Graeme Forbes who turned the ball away for a corner.
Blacktown City forced stand-in goalkeeper Cem Akili into a good save to turn away a Daniel Wilkinson free-kick, but Marconi wasn?t to be outdone because Ben Gough brilliantly found Gordon with a cross even though his header was just over the crossbar.
In the 34? minute another opportunity fell to the Stallions when a Gordon cross found Donevski who superbly controlled the ball and shot, only to see Necevski pull off a very good save.
Blacktown City?s best chance was in the 36? minute when Akwasi Agyei, with an almighty shot from outside the box, hit the crossbar after Akili had punched away a Jordan Simpson cross.
The last real chance of an entertaining first-half belonged to the home side when Ozbey was too quick for Necevski and latched onto a long ball from Gordon, but in the end his shot was narrowly off target.
The first-half, despite finishing scoreless, was most entertaining and both sides would have gone into the dressing sheds with a certain degree of confidence for the second stanza of play.
In the 51? minute Blacktown City opened the scoring from nothing really after a long ball from Agyei was headed back by Ben Bronneberg and it just deceived his own goalkeeper standing off his line, and bounced into the back of the net. In the end it proved to be the difference between both sides.
Ozbey replied twice shortly afterwards. Firstly, with a very powerful drive that sailed just over and, secondly, when he intercepted a Luke Austin header back to his own goalkeeper, but in the end Necevski was able to brilliantly save at Ozbey?s feet.
In the 74? minute Chris Bedzo dribbled past two Marconi defenders, but his final shot lacked any real conviction and ended up just wide.
The last chance of the match belonged to Marconi when Ozbey got the ball into the middle for Donevski but somehow his shot from close-range sailed over. There was time for no further action as the referee called a halt to proceedings.
