German, Williams and Newcastle?
The 33-year old has a steady girlfriend in Kate and away from the game is a self-employed plasterer who still maintains his zest for the game and continues to view each game as though it were his first: ?I don?t think about hanging up the boots to be honest,? he says: ?I?m enjoying my football and hope to for some time yet, so long as I can contribute to the team.?
Preferring to play in the centre of midfield, coach Phil Moss utilized him more on the right side this season but he is happy to play anywhere across the park and is noted for not letting the team down wherever he slots in.
After having stints with Central Coast Coasties and the Newcastle Breakers, in their NSL days, you would feel the guy would be satisfied with his lot but he still harbors plenty of ambition and desire: ?I would always want to be involved within the game but in what capacity I?m not sure at this stage.:
Aware of the impending finals series around the corner he cheekily comments: ?If we can?t win the minor premiership then we can win the Grand Final,? before adding tongue in cheek: ?Any team will do to beat in the final.?
When not chuckling he adds: ?Seriously though, we have hit a slight plateau recently but we have played some fantastic football and you would rather have a shaky period now than during the finals series of course.
?That said we will certainly be fighting to finish as high as possible in the Telechoice Premier League and then take each game as it comes.?
Williams also enjoyed junior representative honors in his younger days and says a German coach called Rudi Sporrer was his greatest influence when starting out, along with his main boyhood hero, and fellow Novocastrian, Craig Johnston.
Although not really a follower of any team he does cite Liverpool as a side he watches out for because, in his words, they play good football and that is something he, and many others around the world, appreciates.
John Kosmina and Frank Farina are two others he has admired and with those names there is no need to ponder as to why as they remain two of the greatest players ever to don the Australian shirt even today.
?Being able to play football at a decent standard for so many years have always been what I call my greatest achievement in the game,? says Williams.
?To have been able to play for so long and by doing something I love is fantastic and I will keep doing it for as long as I possible can.?
With sentiments like that I?m not sure about Williams but I?m looking forward to the finals and what all teams bring to the table, should make for a fascinating series as the players become psyched up and prepare to do battle.
Before that though, we still have a few very important weeks of the league season to go and that is something not to be missed either.
