Bankstown down Marconi but result academic

At Marconi Stadium the home side was faced with the task of taking on Bankstown City who had already secured their place in the final of the Tiger Turf Cup Final next weekend.
However, for both sides season 2008 will not be remembered fondly in annals of each club.
After the game one of Bankstown City?s better players Steve Liavas accurately summed up the match.
?The game was a bit scrappy in the first-half but it opened up a bit in the second-half and we took our chances; it?s good to finish off the season with a win,? he said.
Luke Casserly, Marconi?s acting coach in the latter half of the season, could not hide his disappointment.
?The game totally summed up our season,? he stated. ?We had an opportunity today to see what kind of memory about us we would leave people with this season and, unfortunately, it summed up the whole year and it simply wasn?t good enough.?
The question now that Marconi needs to answer before 2009 is who will take over control of the team on a permanent basis? Casserly, who is in the running to be the 2009 coach, wasn?t giving too much away.
?The club has some decisions to make about the direction next year; basically, I have told the club that in whatever capacity they would like me, I will support them 100%.
?It could range from coach to assistant coach to just playing. I would like to coach down the track but next year is a difficult one.
?If the club feels that I?m the right person, well then I?m very much ready for the challenge.?
The game itself didn?t really display much until the 16? minute when Phillip Makrys, arguably the best player on the field, thought that he would try his luck from outside the box with a free-kick that sailed over Cem Akili?s crossbar.
It was Makrys back at it again with another free kick in the 25? minute that this time found captain George Nohra, but his header ended up into the side netting.
Marconi immediately replied when Jay Lucas superbly intercepted the ball a minute later and charged towards goal only for his final shot to narrowly miss the intended target.
In the 28?minute Tallan Martin beautifully set up Nahuel Arrarte who tried to steer the ball into the back of the net with a powerful drive, but Ibrahim Haydar showed tremendous courage to put his body in the way, block the shot and send the ball spinning away for a corner kick.
Marconi continued to press forward with Ante Deur but his shot was well held by the visiting goalkeeper.
In the 38? minute another Makrys free-kick was not cleared by the Stallions defence and Shane Webb snuck in behind all and sundry, but the side netting was as far as he got.
After a scoreless first-half it didn?t take Bankstown long to open the scoring in the second-half. It was the 48? minute and Makrys was given far too much space by the Marconi defence and with a powerful drive from the edge of the box he beat a lunging Akili.
Marconi hit back in the 58?minute when Vuko Tomasevic ? not long on the field ? showed some great determination to win the ball and then turn it into the net with a nice finish just under the crossbar.
However, a minute later Bankstown recaptured the lead: Stefce Soleski was given far too much space on the left and, as he reached the by-line, he somehow managed to steer his shot into the back of the net from the most unbelievable angle.
Liavas nicely set up Shane Webb in the 69?minute but his powerful drive was only just off target.
Marconi tried its luck with a Lucas free-kick that only just went over but Bankstown were not to be outdone.
Liavas, always dangerously looming around, forced Akili into a good save from close-range and shortly afterwards Danny Slaveski beautifully fed the ball through to Akili Hussein who blasted his close-range shot just wide.
However, Bankstown were rewarded for their pressure and on the stroke of full-time Hussein got his reward and his side?s third goal when Nathan Moulds seemed to give him too much freedom and his unchallenged shot just ended up in the goal without any problem.
It was no more than Bankstown deserved and for Marconi it just re-emphasised that 2008 was certainly not their year.
