The Referee’s View; an interview with Arrive Alive Women’s Premier League Referee, Ariane Nemorin

Ariane

Ariane Nemorin is one of the new breed of referees, officiating each week in the state?s elite female competitions. Ariane followed her Dad into the refereeing ranks after having previously played the game for some years.
What?s it like being a referee? What motivates a young person to take on the most difficult job in our game? Let?s find out from Ariane what makes a referee tick.
Occupation: I?m a student. I?m studying a Bachelor of Primary Teaching/Bachelor of International Studies at UTS
How long have you been refereeing? : Since 2004; so about 4 years.
What made you decide to take up refereeing? : I wanted to stay fit whilst making some money. My Dad has been a referee for 25 years so he influenced my decision.
Have you been/are you still a player yourself? If so, which club did you play for? : I was a player for about 6 years. I?ve played for many clubs including West Pennant Hills Lions and Granville Magpies, prior to them becoming Granville Rage.
What do you like most about being a referee? : The pay at the end of the day, but also the exercise and meeting new people.
What?s been your funniest moment when refereeing? : I don?t know about the funniest moment but one of the most embarrassing would have been during a match I was refereeing an Under 16 Boys match at Rockdale. I misjudged the speed of the ball and tripped over my own two feet! Luckily my brother was in the crowd so, when he heard anyone laughing at me, he gave them one of his trademark ?Are you serious? That?s my little sister you?re making fun? glances. That tended to stifle the laughter!
If you had to sing a song at karaoke, what would it be? : Definitely Alicia Keys ?If I ain?t got you?. I?m actually contemplating walking down the aisle on my wedding day to that song?.ha, ha!
Who would you most like to be stuck in a lift with? : Mr Squiggle! He?d keep me amused for hours. His upside down and sideways tricks are incredible. He?s a very talented puppet! Or even Agro; he was my hero! Bring them both back.
What two teams in world football would you like to referee a game between? : Hmm, Brazil and Germany most probably.
Interests outside of football? : Swimming, sunbaking, shopping, going out for coffee, dancing, spin classes, touch football, action ball, travelling (where does this girl find time to referee?)
Do you have a favourite meal before a game? : Toast with vegemite.
What?s your favourite football memory? : Uhm?probably being an AR for the Matildas v Canada game. Also, meeting Kevin 07 and Harry Kewell.
Thanks for your time Ariane. Hopefully we?ll see you in action during the Arrive Alive NSW Women?s Premier League Finals series. Good luck for the rest of the season!
