Mariners sunk in Westfield W-League goal feast

Nicole Jones and Emily Van Egmond had the visiting Novocastrians up by three shortly after half time, before Renee Rollason and Kyah Simon responded for the Mariners either side of Joanne Peters? strike for the Jets.
Kick off at Campbelltown Stadium was delayed due to a torrential downpour in the lead up to the game, but despite the tough conditions, both sides performed admirably and in accordance with the derby tradition that has been set by Australia?s fiercest football rivals.
The Jets hit the lead against the run of play when a punch by Mariners shot stopper Lisa Hartley was intercepted by Jones? header inside the penalty area ? a chance she duly converted.
Newcastle doubled their advantage moments before and after the break courtesy of Van Egmond, firstly from a long range effort and secondly following of a fortuitous deflection.
Westfield Matilda Rollason showcased her class by pulling one back for the home side on 65 minutes, before Peters restored the three-goal difference with thirteen minutes to play.
Simon?s consolation in stoppage time, her third goal in Mariners colours, was a fitting reward for a Mariners side that toiled hard but ultimately suffered their third Westfield W-League defeat from as many attempts.
“Again we have played some good football, though once more we have conceded goals against the run of play,” said Mariners Westfield W-League Head Coach Stephen Roche after the match.
“As has been the case recently, our opposition has scored during our best moment of play which is really disappointing.”
The Mariners? Westfield W-League campaign continues on Saturday, 6 December against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium. Kick off is at 4pm AEDT.
