Balgownie hosts Football NSW Centenary Cup 2009

centenary

The Centenary Cup is an annual competition for the Metropolitan Representative League Grade 12 teams and Country and interstate representative teams and provides four days of excellent competition and introduces the players to their first taste of tournament football.
Every team in the Grade 12 Metropolitan Representative League have entered this event, and will be joined by representative teams from Western Branch and Northern Tasmania.
State coaches and selectors from the High Performance Unit will be on hand to run a critical eye over all players with a view to inclusion in scholarship programs and ultimately the state teams.
To be held immediately after the Easter weekend and during the school holidays, over four days from Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th April 2009 we will see 18 teams play a total of 60 matches, culminating in the Finals on Friday afternoon.
For the first time this tournament will be split after the initial round robin series with the first eight teams progressing to the Centenary Cup quarter finals and the next best eight teams being given the opportunity to battle out the Centenary Plate quarter finals.  Winners and Runners-Up medallions will be awarded for both the Centenary Cup and Centenary Plate.
2008 saw Southern Districts break the strong record Sutherland had established in this competition and there will be many challenges for the title in 2009.
The referees will be from the elite Premier Youth squad who will work closely with the local referees.  All referees fees will be paid by Football NSW.
Sydney FC Players will be making a special appearance at the titles on Wednesday 15th April 2009 and will be available for a chat, photographs and autographs and we thank Sydney FC for making these players available.
Sydney FC players will also be present on Friday 17th April 2009 for the Finals to assist the President of Football NSW, Dr Jim Forrest with the presentation of medals.
The draw for the Centenary Cup 2009 can be viewed on this website under Competitions > Tournaments > Centenary Cup.
