One group of women who are normally bitter Sunday rivals will be competing in the Games football competition, the largest football event held in Australia, with 170 teams striving for their chance to win a medal.
The rivals’ group are the Southern United Blue Cockatoos comprising five Sutherland Shire clubs Cronulla RSL, North Sutherland, Como West-Jannali, Georges River and Martin competing in the over 30s competition.
The women play A grade in the shire and have, with their own clubs, achieved success in various tournaments. Many of the women have representative experience and have competed in the final of the 2009 State Cup, with Sutherland Sharks and champions of champions finals experience.
“Some were surprised we went to various clubs for players,” said player Jennifer Grinham. “But we wanted a good side and the women have mixed really well. Some knew each other from other sports as well. I think we have a pretty good chance of a medal.
“We don’t know who will provide our toughest opposition but we will be up against teams from the US, Canada, Guam, Queensland and Victoria.”
Shire businessman Don Truman from Blue Cockatoo Sportswear assisted this local hybrid team with their uniforms and bags.
“It is great to support a local team in an international event. I wish them all the best,” Mr Truman said.
About 28,000 competitors will be competing in 28 sports at the Games, which is open to all abilities, and elite athletes with competitors over 25 years of age.
Another team of women, called Shire Unite, will compete in the over 35s division. Most have been playing A grade.
