Westfield Sports High win 2010 Bill Turner Trophy
Westfield Sports High School won their third Bill Turner Trophy in a row by defeating Cavendish Road Sports High School four goals to one in the Grand Final but did not have things all their own way.
After three minutes Cavendish Road were awarded a free kick approximately 25 metres out from the Westfield goal. Up stepped Lauren Brimelow and struck a high lob into the goal area over the head of Westfield ?keeper Georgia Rowntree for the opening goal.
Six minutes later Westfield equalised when Natasha Jankov made a run down the right hand side and sent a perfect cross in to the Cavendish Road penalty for an easy tap in goal by Iesha Jeffrey.
Cavendish Road immediately replied with several attacks and four minutes later Emily Veivers hit the post from six metres.
Westfield then commenced a series of attacks and it was no surprise when they added their second goal five minutes before half time. Alanna Kennedy made a long run from half way into the Cavendish Road defence, passed to Rhianna Pollicina who sent a quick return ball to Kennedy and she made no mistake from seven metres with a clinical finish. 2-1!
The second half commenced with a quick third goal from Westfields, who received a corner kick in the second minute of the half and Vanisha Kumar volleyed high into the net from six metres out.
Cavendish Road fought back briefly but could not really trouble the Westfields defence who always seemed to have a defender in perfect position. With five minutes remaining the Westfield defence cleared the ball well downfield and Kumar made a well timed run past the Cavendish Road defenders and cooly lobbed Chantelle Ryder in the Cavendish Road goal for the fourth goal and the Bill Turner Trophy title.
Westfields have now won two hat tricks of titles and eight in the past fifteen years proving them to be the premiers girl?s team for their age.
