Waratah Cup Quarter-Final: Dapto Dandaloo unleash Fury against Bankstown City FC in Cup classic
The Lions kicked off the quarter-final tie at Seymour Shaw Park and found themselves under the pump inside the first minute when former NSW Premier League Gold Medal winner Brad Boardman broke through the centre ? denied only by a fine save by Jordan Nikolovski on a drizzly night in Miranda.
Bankstown responded with a free-kick into the area but the volleyed shot was blocked and found its way out for a goal-kick in a promising set piece in early end-to-end football that had the decent sized crowd baying for more.
Nicolo Sama scored the opener for Bankstown in the 7? minute when skinning his marker on the left and going one-on-one with Mitchell Blowes in the Dapto net. The shot-stopper managed to get something on the ball but unable to take the pace off it as the effort dribbled over the line.
Samuel Matthews replied with a shot 3? minutes later that whistled past the post to leave Bankstown under no illusions the job had just begun, as a minute later Dominic Magill was put through to beat the offside trap and net the equaliser in a high tempo encounter.
Former Socceroo Alvin Ceccoli then fired a free-kick into the wall for a corner and the pressure was kept on Bankstown City who were forced to defend stoutly and play out from the back.
Peter Vassillis tried his luck from outside the box that had Blowes sharply down to his right to gather as City fought back in a thrilling Cup tie in the rain, the standard of football was pacey, the passing was slick and the chances were aplenty.
David Reid almost put Dapto ahead in the 21? minute but for desperate defending that saw defence and goalkeeper blocking the shot as again City found themselves under increasing pressure at the back.
Dapto proved they were not to be denied and the lead was taken in the 32? minute when Chris Smith put the ball in the net at the back stick from a Sam Munro free-kick.
Smith had another chance moments later from the edge of the area that was scuffed and bobbled straight to Nikolovski?s grateful hands.
City were battling hard and were showing plenty of determination yet struggled to gain any headway.
On 40? minutes David Reid snapped up a half-volley from the edge of the area to dampen the spirits of their opponents to make it three, leaving City to look more than a little shell-shocked.
Dandaloo deserved their lead but three first-half goals conceded by Bankstown was a little hard and Boardman could have made it worse when breaking through in the 44? minute only to hit his shot straight at Nikolovski on their old stomping ground.
Bankstown were playing well but were being shown a lesson by the slick and flowing movement of their opponents in the slippery conditions but were giving a good account of themselves all over the park, except on the score board, not for the lack of effort though.
Bankstown City FC came out of the dressing room fired up with Adem Kir cautioned in the 46? minute for a rough challenge and then creating two chances in the 48? and 49? minute with Nicolo Sama providing the pass for Reuben Lagos to attempt to clip in at the near post.
The first attempt was beaten away by Blowes and then the reverse pairing saw Sama fire straight at the Fury goalkeeper as they wrestled back control at the start of the second period.
It was a false dawn for City who found themselves further behind when Smith again beat the offside trap and netted the fourth in the 52? minute and increase the Fury?s lead to put the result beyond doubt.
Zac Vallorani slid in to prevent Boardman from getting a shot away when clean through and Nikolovski was called into action from the resulting corner from a back post header by the same player as Dapto again turned up the heat in what was fast becoming a master class.
Brad Boardman did get his goal on 58? minutes, further highlighting his side?s dominance with a volleyed goal for Dapto?s fifth of the night.
Boardman, having stepped off the plane from the UK the previous evening, was replaced by Kieran Deane in the 62? minute to leave the field to a resounding applause for his nights work.
Shannon Burgin had an effort for Bankstown in the 66? minute that went straight at Blowes, though chances were becoming few and far between.
The game began to wind down with the outcome resolved and from the high tempo the match had been played in, though Bankstown claimed a consolation goal in the 82? minute when Nic Sama netted his, and the side?s, second for the evening.
At the other end, Josh Bingham added a sixth for Dapto in stoppage time to complete the rout and set up a showdown for Dapto against Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw Park next Wednesday night.
George Nohra, player/coach of Bankstown City FC was disconsolate after the game when commenting:
?It was one of those days in football where you can?t put the ball in the net and get dominated and Dapto were deserved winners at the end so well done.
?We will of course concentrate on the League as we had won ten on the trot coming into this match, and to come to this is an odd performance for us.
?We got dominated and that is what the difference was tonight, we didn?t execute the game plan we had set and against a quality side like Dandaloo you will get punished for it.
?They wanted the game more than us, the hunger was there for them and we didn?t show it in the end.
?We?ve had a heavy program with catch-up games and midweek matches and that is always tough but that is not an excuse so we?ll look to get back on par this weekend hopefully and put this behind us.?
His elated counterpart, coach of Dapto, Norm Boardman commented:
?Really pleased with the performance and result this evening, it was a great effort and as you know we had a few players missing this tonight so it was a ?backs to the wall? attitude from us and it paid off.
?The guys who came in stood up, young Sam Munro in for Noel Spencer did a fantastic job and we re-shuffled the pack and he did a terrific job.
?The pitch suits us nicely with the football we try to play, there?s only a couple of bad bounces but not too many so the passing can be accurate and we can play with confidence in trusting the surface which suits our passing game well.
?It will be a tough game against Sutherland here next week, it?s their home ground and no-one wants to get beaten on their home turf but we?ll give as good as we get.
?I think Bankstown came here tonight thinking we were a pub side and roll over the top of us but I feel what really did it for us is that our fitness levels are good and we went on with the job in the second-half when many would have expected us to sit back or capitulate; but we didn?t.
?Jacob Borg is another who should be mentioned as he did an outstanding job on the left-hand side with a job to do on Rueben Lagos and he did extremely well so we?ll look forward to the next round here against the Sharks.?
