Inner West Magic showed their class in edging out Sydney City Eagles, whilst Boomerangs FS hammered a depleted Enfield Rovers.
Campbelltown Quake too strong for Phoenix
A Daryl Fernandez brace wasn?t enough for Phoenix, who were defeated 7-3 by Campbelltown Quake at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium.
Robbie Davey scored Phoenix?s other goal, whilst for Quake there were braces from Danny Martinez, Mark Symington and Scott Madden, with a single strike from Dean Lockhardt completing a convincing victory.
For the home side it was a welcome return to the form expected of them after an indifferent start to the season.
Conversely for Phoenix it was their third defeat of the season, but for their coach Chris Cowley, there is plenty to be optimistic about for his newly promoted side.
?I?m happy with the performance, especially as it was against Quake,? he said.
?I know they?ve been out of form but they?ll do well this season,? Cowley added.
With the score level at 2-2 at the break, the scene was set for an upset, but mistakes cost the visitors dearly in the second period.
?We had a few players out so we were doing well to be at 2-2 at half time, having come from behind,? Cowley started.
?We worked hard, but silly mistakes cost us.
?We?ve stepped up to the Premier League and we?re doing better than I thought,? he added.
Campbelltown Quake manager Carlos Martinez was pleased to get the money off their back after a poor start to the season.
?Relieved, is the word!? he said.
?It was a good effort.
?We took our form from the State Titles into the game and we really targeted this week as the one where we would get off the mark.
?We got off to a good start but we ended up 3-2 down.
?We played really good Futsal though,? he added.
Quake coach Simon Keith implored his senior players to step up to the plate given their start to the season and they did as the coach asked.
?Ian McAndrew, Danny Martinez, Dean Lockardt and Mark Symington all stepped up and led the younger guys,? Martinez said.
?They stood up to be counted and proved a point to the coach,? he added.
The result gives Quake a valuable platform on which to build the remainder of their season.
?It?s definitely something to build on,? Martinez said.
?It?ll give us confidence.
?Winning and losing can become a habit,? he added.
Inner West Magic prevail over Sydney City Eagles
Goals from Anthony Poniris and Marino Musumeci were enough for Inner West Magic to pick up a 2-0 victory over Sydney City Eagles.
Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Stadium was the venue for what was a close match in terms of the scoreline, but Sydney City had their goalkeeper to thank for the defeat not being heavier.
The first goal from Poniris was a stunner, his left foot rocket finding the roof of the net, before Musumeci added the second from a set piece.
Inner West coach Carmine Bortone was understandably pleased with the performance.
?I thought it was pretty good,? he said.
?I think we dominated the game the whole way through and their keeper kept them in the game,? he added.
The win leaves Magic with 9 points from 5 games heading into a huge match against Dural Warriors this Saturday night.
Bortone is looking forward to the encounter.
?It?s a very big game against Dural,? he said.
?I think we?ll be okay though.
?The team is playing well and I think it?ll be a good game,? Bortone concluded.
Boomerangs FS dominate Enfield Rovers
Enfield Rovers, shorn of a number of first team regulars including Futsalroo Lachlan Wright, crashed to a 5-0 defeat in Canberra at the hands of Boomerangs FS.
It was always going to be a difficult assignment for Ernie Bivona?s side but despite the undoubted difficulties associated with the match, he was pleased with how Enfield Rover handled the fixture.
?We?re going to look a lot better when we get all our senior players back, but we still demonstrated the depth that we have here,? he said.
Boomerangs FS were clinical in their execution, stinging Enfield Rovers on a number of counter attacks, something Bivona put down to his side?s lack of experience.
?We created a lot of chances in the first half, but they have some old heads who knew when to counter and finish for goals,? he said.
?Creating chances doesn?t win you points.
?Boomerangs FS are a good side and Canberra is always a tough place to go,? Bivona added.
Enfield faces a tough test against Mascot Vipers next weekend, but Bivona is optimistic that they will find the right outcome.
?We?ll have a lot of senior players back,? he started.
?When we have a full team I?m not afraid of anyone.
?It?s a long season and there?s absolutely no need to panic,? Bivona concluded.
