NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley MP accompanied by Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP and Recreation Manager from Penrith City Council, Andrew Robinson announced that Cook Park facilities at St Marys will get a much needed upgrade with funding support from the NSW Government and Penrith City Council.
Cook Park is operated by the Nepean District Soccer Football Association.
“The amount of $22,556 comes from Round 2 of the NSW Government’s Participation and Facility Grant Program,” Mr Annesley said.
Mrs Davies was delighted the NSW Government had included the Mulgoa electorate as part of its sporting facilities funding support for over 160 local sports groups across NSW this year. “Local construction jobs and businesses will benefit from the activity, as this well utilised community infrastructure is upgraded and refurbished” Mrs Davies said.
“This NSW Government funding will go a long way to improving player and spectator safety in my electorate for many years to come” Mrs Davies said.
Mrs Davies said the grant will go towards the restoration of the 50 year old facility that is considered home to generations of footballers and football supporters in the Nepean District. The use of Cook Park has grown significantly since the facilities were originally built 50 years ago, and are in dire need of refurbishment.
Penrith City Council announced that they will agree to contribute an additional $20,000 to help complete the upgrades.
“Not only do we use Cook Park as the home ground for our district representative teams, Nepean FC but we also have the honour of hosting home games for the National Youth League side of the Hyundai A-League’s newest club, the Western Sydney Wanderes FC.” said Nepean District Soccer Football Association President, John Churchward.
“The cost of refurbishing the building which includes player and referee changes rooms and toilets, and security fencing around the grounds could never have been met without this grant from the NSW Government and Penrith City Council” said Linda Cerone, Operations Manager, Nepean District Soccer Football Association
