FNSW Futsal Premier League Round 9 Review

Football NSW Futsal Premier League round nine saw leaders Dural Warriors consolidate its prime position with a 6-2 demolition of Inner West Magic, Boomerangs whip Mascot Vipers 8-0, Mountain Majik edge Enfield Rovers 7-5 and Phoenix Futsal Club host Campbelltown Quake at Ryde Sports & Community Centre.

The points table shows defending champions Dural on 20 points closely followed by Boomerangs (19), Campbelltown (16) and Inner West (15) with Mountain Majik (12) and Enfield (10) not far behind. Mascot (6) and Phoenix (5) seem destined to battle each other in a bid to avoid the wooden spoon.
Individually, Boomerangs weapon Daniel Bennett leads the charts with 12 goals, one ahead of Enfield’s Giovanni Leuzzi (11) while Corey Bizco (Majik), Shervin Adeli (Enfield) and Michael Reeve (Boomerangs) have 10 goals each. Daniel Fogarty (Magic) has nine strikes, one more than Grant Cornwell (Mascot), Toby Seeto (Dural), Harley da Silva (Quake) and Shayne Ardle (Quake) to round out a tight top-10, with Ryan Keir (Boomerangs) and Danny Martinez (Quake) lurking in the shadows.

Dural overpower Inner West
Competition leaders Dural Warriors dismantled Inner West Magic 6-2 in a muscly game at Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday to go eight games unbeaten.

Inner West took an early lead before Bruno Pivato hit back for the visitors to restore parity, a Greg Giovenali goal pushing Dural into a tense 2-1 halftime lead.

Magic impressed early in the second term but the Warriors held firm with Giovenali completing his hat-trick and Blake Rosier and Toby Seeto strikes rounding out a tidy 6-2 victory, Dural’s fifth in a row against Inner West and enough to keep them a point ahead of Boomerangs on the points ladder.

Warriors coach Rob Varela gave his team a big tick in accounting for pre-season heavyweights Magic. “Our best performance so far this season after a slow start, against a very determined Magic,” he said. “Some disciplined defending and good ball control were the features of our game.”

“It was also very pleasing to be able to again give a 15-year-old and 17-year-old a taste of senior futsal and see them do very well.”
 
Majik outgun Rovers

Mountain Majik won a good old fashioned gunfight over Enfield Rovers, taking the spoils with an edgy 7-5 victory at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium on Saturday

The first half resembled a classic high noon showdown as both sides fired shot after shot at each other before the dust settled on a deadlocked 4-4 draw.

A possessed Majik took to the court in the second term and really turned the screws on Rovers, striding their way to a vital 7-5 victory and overturn a heartbreaking round-three 4-3 loss to Enfield.

Greg Kondek, Jamie Dib and Grant Cornwell fired in doubles for the Mountaineers, added to by Mitch Long’s goal, and for Enfield Giovanni Leuzzi claimed a couple, while Kaveh Hagh, Shervin Adeli and Robert Foti scored one each.

The result enabled Majik to leapfrog Rovers on the ladder and sit three points behind Inner West ahead of a crucial meeting with Boomerangs next weekend.

It doesn’t get any easier for a hapless Enfield who face the competition’s top-three sides Quake, Warriors and Boomerangs in their next three outings.
 
Boomerangs beat Mascot
Boomerangs defeated Mascot Vipers 8-0 at Canberra’s mpowerdome on Saturday and maintain the pressure on league leaders Dural.

Mascot were never in the contest trailing 3-0 at the break as Michael Reeve bagged four goals for the Territorians, Daniel Bennett netted another two to go top of the scorers list with 12 season strikes (and his fifth brace in nine games), and contributions from Ryan Keir and Daniel Fulton rounded out the eight-goal scoreline.

Boomerangs are the league’s most prolific strikeforce with 46 goals from nine matches and they’ll need everybody firing against fourth-placed Majik and third-placed Quake over the next fortnight.
 
Quake level Phoenix
Campbelltown Quake shutout Phoenix 3-0 at Ryde Sports & Community Centre on Saturday to overtake Inner West on the table and stake a top-three position for the first time this season.

Campbelltown controlled the game from the outset and patience and good ball movement paved the way for Shayne Ardle, Danny Martinez and Harley da Silva to fire in goals at the offensive end as the Quake defence disrupted Phoenix out of the game and make up for a 4-2 loss in round two.

Campbelltown moved into third place, three points behind Boomerangs ahead of two explosive away games at Enfield and Canberra.

Quake manager Carlos Martinez praised Andrew Haim in goals and congratulated 16-year-old Anthony Haddad on his open men debut and hoped the five game unbeaten run would continue. “It was a good result for us as we now climb to third place,” he said.

Phoenix coach Chris Cowley rued several post-rattlers as yet another home game slipped away from them (no wins in five tries at Ryde). “Quake had a lot of possession… and lapses in concentration and not closing the ball cost us the first two goals,” he said.
