Womens State League Round 17 Review
It was another action packed weekend of Women’s State League action, as Nepean kept winning, Blacktown City found their mojo once again, St George continued their goal scoring ways and Southern Districts stayed in the hunt. This is the round 17 review.
St George FC 9 defeat APIA Leichhardt 2
St George FC have continued to build their momentum, as the competition edges closer to the finals, as they have delivered a glut of goals late, punishing APIA Leichhardt, who are looking to the end of the season.
The first half was more a slow burner, as the two sides felt each other out. APIA proved to be a tougher opponent to break down than in previous weeks. St George for their part opened the defense twice with Koinis bagging two goals.
It was more to type in the second stanza, as the slow burner turned into a wild forest fire. Eleven goals were scored between the two sides. Georgia Koinis was the star, finishing her quadrella of goals alongside Melissa Toumbelekis who had her second hat-trick in as many weekends.
For APIA, Madeleine Bollard scored their two goals in a game that gave further evidence that St George FC will be a force in the upcoming finals series.
St George FC would like to send it’s condolences to Koo Barbi’s mother and wife of 13s coach, Mario on Friday.
Nepean FC 9 defeated Parramatta Ladyhawks 1
Nepean continued their winning streak, moving it to seven after an afternoon delight against the struggling Parramatta Ladyhawks. The win keeps them on top of the ladder under pressure from Bankstown who returned to the winner’s circle.
Alix Waddell built on her winning goal from last week with four goals to put away the Ladyhawks. She was ably assisted with Steph Lagudi and Jessica Elliot scoring two goals each, as Kaitlin Harms chipped in with one.
Parramatta scored a goal, to give themselves something to redeem from the match but they will be looking towards the end of season now.
Southern Districts Emeralds 2 defeated Gladesville Ravens 1
Southern Districts have given themselves an outside chance of playing finals football due to their game in hand. They defeated Gladesville Ravens two-one, away at Peel Park this afternoon.
It makes two wins on the trot for the South-West Sydney team, who scored twice through Ashleigh Danielson and Natasha Portelli showing that the week off after their washout last weekend against Parramatta Ladyhawks had no effect.
Gladesville pulled one back through Rosy Boswell but will be left to rue a chance to catch up ground on Mount Druitt after their loss against Bankstown. It will be a tough ask for them to make them finals now.
Bankstown City FC 6 defeat Mount Druitt Town Rangers 2
Bankstown City after a barren three weeks, have got themselves back into the winners circle with a dominant six-two win over the Town Rangers. They had been impressive in recent weeks before surrendering second position back to City.
Sammy Muscat was the star of the opening half hour scoring a hat-trick before the half hour mark. Muscat added a fourth in the second half to complete the impressive display that stunned the Town Rangers.
Mount Druitt had been scoring with ease in their recent victories and two goals would have given them a victory against other opponents. Bankstown City added goals from Lindsay Kohlet and Tania Babin in either half to round off the win.
