Berries ready for new football season
PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2 side Bankstown Berries have hit the ground running in 2015, taking out the Preseason Cup.
Club President Theo Mitrothanasis said it was fantastic to add a trophy to the cabinet.
“It’s exciting because we haven’t had any silverware for a few years.
“We’ve be in Grand Finals but haven’t won any trophies.
“It’s been a while and something is better than nothing.”
With the beginning of the season around the corner, the Berries will greet it with great confidence following the PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2 Preseason Cup success.
“Winning the Cup means a good start, a good start to the season and hopefully we can build on this and win the title.”
Berries staff, players and fans appetites are rising and they don’t plan on stoping with the PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2 Preseason Cup.
“We want to go as far as we can in the Westfield FFA Cup, finish within the top five and hopefully win the Championship.
“We want to make that step to the states elite competition.”
In a strong PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2 competition, Mitrothanasis recognises there will be stern competition from other teams.
“I believe Spirit FC are a strong all round team, they showed it making the final and on paper, Bankstown City look a real good team.
The Berries President feels that experience is what the club was missing last season.
“We had a lot of young boys and not much experience but we’re always learning and we’ve brought in experienced players in key positions.”
Two of those players are former Men’s 2 Championship winners with the Macarthur Rams and one of the best custodians in the league.
“Lewis Duchense from Macarthur will give us strength and height in the centre of defence, Gerard Ouffoue also from the Rams will be of big importance and a pivotal attacking player for us while Michael Frost is an excellent and well organised goalkeeper.
Two players that are worth keeping an eye out for in the Berries line-up is left winger Mitchell Davidson and Nick Paras.
“The flair that Mitchell brings down the left wing could make a real difference for us this year.
“Paras has been playing in the first grade squad since he was 17.
“He had a massive role in the final, scoring a screamer and assisting the other two goals.”
The Berries aim to give an opportunity to youngsters and have promoted four from their last years reserve grade team.
“We brought up four players from the 20’s last year and they’re playing a crucial role in pushing the older guys in keeping their positions.
“Aleksandar Lekoski has taken his opportunity, scoring in the final and being one of the leading scorers in the Preseason Cup.”
