Women’s State League Round 4 Review

Unfortunately, most of this week’s round did not survive the weather, as rain continued to fall across the state.

Only one game went ahead, featuring the Western NSW Mariners FC and Mt. Druitt Town Rangers who played at Wade Park on Sunday.

Western NSW Mariners FC vs Mt. Druitt Town Rangers: 4-1.

The Western NSW Mariners came into this fixture having won both of their opening rounds. After a week’s break, where they avoided a long journey to Rockdale, the Mariners were confident in their ability of making it three from three in 2015. The Mt. Druitt Town Rangers were looking to upset the homeside and claim their second win of the season.

However, the Mariners firmly established themselves as early favourites after sweeping aside the Rangers’ resistance at Wade Park. Mt. Druitt came to play attacking football, as they have done this season, but were not able to hold back the home team’s even more potent offering.

Meg Embleton (two) and Jess Salamoni (one) picked up where they left off in previous rounds, scoring impressive goals, while Kya Gobdier also added one to her season tally. Although the Mariners’ were missing their first choice centre-half and fullback, their defensive effort was solid and the formidable Rangers were only able to manage a lone goal. Coach Mick Gobdier was delighted with the efforts of the two young debutants who stepped up for the Mariners in Alyssa Armstrong and Bridie Comisky.

Similarly to last week, the Mariners started off proceedings relatively slowly, but took a one goal lead into half-time. Shortly after the resumption of play, the Rangers struck back with a well-taken free kick from outside of the box. The Mariners responded swiftly, reclaiming their lead just as it had been stolen, before finding their stride and scoring another two unanswered. With a perfect start to 2015, their bid for promotion is well underway.
