Statistics show that Lilli Pilli 1 All Age Men’s team are currently one of the premier grassroots football outfits in NSW.
They are the Sutherland Association First Grade Champions and Bill Cullinan State Cup winners, having played 23 matches without defeat, not even one draw in that incredible run.
“I’ve seen a lot of football and many teams over many years and this is as good as it gets at a grassroots level”, Lilli Pilli Football Club President Greg Storey said.
Backed up by coach David Zabic; “By far this has been the best team I’ve ever coached. They’re outstanding”.
However it’s the story behind the stats that reveals the true nature of Lilli Pilli FC.
From the top All Age Men’s team through all the women’s, girls’ and boys’ teams, there are 1600 players in the club and none is considered any more important than the other.
“At our Under 6s trials at the start of the season we had 120 kids there and it was players from our All Age teams who volunteered to help with ground control and running the barbecue”, Mr Storey said.
The Championship winning coach himself is perhaps the best example of the spirit at Lilli Pilli FC. He also coaches three other teams; his daughter’s under 8As, his other daughter’s 13Cs and his son’s 14Cs.
“It’s not just about coaching football but preparing them for life. How to work as a team and score those goals”, Mr Zabic said.
The All Age Men’s team’s only loss of the season came back in April in Round Four of the Westfield FFA Cup when they were beaten by Spirit FC, who went on to win the PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2 Premiership this year.
Lilli Pilli 1 play for the love of the game but they don’t mind winning either. Victory in the upcoming Football NSW Champion of Champions tournament would tick the last box in a season so far full of silverware.
