Only three games were played on Sunday in the PlayStation 4 NPL NSW Women’s competition.

Some interesting results in the three games may have surprised many as the second half of the season got underway.

Blacktown Spartans 0-6 North Shore Mariners

On a beautiful afternoon at Blacktown Football Park it was one-way traffic as the North Shore Mariners went home as comfortable winners.

In a match holding much importance, victory was imperative for both to keep within touching distance of finals places.

It was the away side that hit the lead just after the quarter hour mark.

Daisy Arrowsmith broke through one on one with Sarah Easthope, the Spartans keeper did well saving the first effort but the rebound fell to the feet of Chloe Logarzo who had an open goal to aim for, making no mistake.

It was almost a second for Logarzo in the 22nd minute but Easthope did well to scramble the ball out for a corner.

The Mariners doubled their lead with 24 minutes on the clock.

Easthope fumbled a routine catch in the six-yard-box that allowed Ariella Cabezas to slot the ball home.

In the 38th minute the Mariners were well in control as Cabezas picked up her second of the match.

A well delivered flat corner by current Matilda Logarzo saw Cabezas flick the ball beyond Easthope as the Spartans defence began to crumble.

Arrowsmith then sent the away side further in front shortly after the break.

Picking up a neat pass on the edge of the area, Arrowsmith did well to curl the ball beyond Easthope and into the back of the net.

The away side continued to press in search of more goals with the Spartans struggling to keep the ball and organise an attack.

A fantastic run by Rani cavarretta down the left saw her cut the ball back for Kate Hensman who did well to wrap her foot around the ball, only for Easthope to get down and save well.

Hensman had another opportunity for the away side with a free kick on the edge of the area but her well struck effort was saved by Easthope.

The Mariners made it five as the game slowly drew to a close.

Bridget Booker made a great run down the right, delivering a fantastic ball into the box that Tiffany Patterson got onto the end of, flicking the ball beyond Easthope.

It was six for the away side seconds before the end.

A swift counter saw Cavarretta break through and into the Spartans box, unselfishly squaring the ball up for Hensman who calmly finished off the move.

Blacktown Spartans 0

North Shore Mariners 5 (Logarzo 16’, Cabezas 24’, 38’, Arrowsmith 49’, Patterson 78’, Hensman 89’)

North West Sydney Koalas 3-0 Macarthur Rams

At ELS Hall Park on Sunday afternoon, the North West Sydney Koalas hosted the Macarthur Rams.

A victory for the Koalas could’ve propelled them to first place while the Rams needed points to reignite their Championship aspirations.

The Koalas started well, springing to a 2-0 first half lead courtesy of goals from Tara Andrews and Natalie Penman.

Alisha Bass secured the points for the home side in the second half as they came away with a 3-0 win.

The result pushed Stephen Peters’ side to the top of the table as other results went their way.

The Rams remain in fourth but the gap has closed and will now be looking over their shoulders.

Manly United 2-0 Illawarra Stingrays

Cromer Park was the venue for Sunday’s clash between Manly United and the Illawarra Stingrays.

United were in great form and would really stake a claim with a win against the Stingrays.

They started in the right way, grabbing a goal in the 34th minute through Sarah Yatim to lead 1-0 at the break.

Louise Neville then secured the points for the home side with a goal 15 minutes before the end to secure a massive point.

The young side is in fantastic form and if this can continue they will find themselves playing finals football.
