The rain swept away all but one game this weekend that being the Western NSW Mariners defeating the APIA Leichhardt Tigers 2-0.

That game though had serious implications for the ladder at the end of the 90 minutes.

Western NSW Mariners 2 defeated APIA Leichhardt Tigers 0

Western NSW Mariners recorded a priceless two-goal win against APIA on a cold afternoon in Mudgee.

The home side dominated the first half as they held possession well and knocked it around the APIA side which produced their opener.

Katie Pakai-Kelly rounded out the impressive first half performance with a goal which pleased Mariners coach Michael Godbier.

APIA came back into the contest in the second half but Samantha Wood sealed all three points for the Mariners with her 89th minute goal.

“I was very happy with the result considering we had no football for two and a half weeks before today

“We knocked the ball around and held possession extremely well in the first half and that is where got the goals” finished Godbier.

APIA missed two central players in Erin Clout and Sam Scarlato but their coach Matteo Maiorana didn’t use that as an excuse for the loss.

“That was one of the best performances in the season despite our absences and we responded well to how the Mariners were playing.

“We just couldn’t score despite the domination and Mariners are a good side and punished us

“It is a shame that we head home with no points after such a good performance.” finished Maiorana.

The result in a rain affected round lifts Western NSW Mariners to within two points of third place.

Washed out: UNSW Lions vs Gladesville Ravens, Parramatta FC vs SD Raiders and Mt Druitt Town Rangers vs St George FC
