Futsal State League Grand Finals shine at VSP
There was plenty of high octane action as Valentine Sports Park played host to the 2016/2017 Futsal State League Grand Finals on Saturday 18th of February as ten grades fought tooth and nail throughout the day in winning bragging rights about being crowned Champions in their respective age groups.
12 Boys
Central Coast Futsal Club got the Futsal State League Grand Final day off to an entertaining start with a 5-1 victory over Sutherland Sharks Futsal Club in the 12 boys final.
The team from the Coast asserted their dominance early as Ronith Revaiah swept home in the opening minute from a slick passing movement to make it 1-0.
Charlie Entwistle added their second with a stinging strike which fooled the Sharks keeper and sent the mostly Central Coast crowd into raptures.
As a display of their dominance, Central Coast opened up the Sharks several time but for the finishing could’ve blown the scoreline out more.
They did add a third in the 11th minute, as Noah Nicholls stepped up on a free-kick and curved it past the disparing Sean Peters in the Sharks net. 3-0.
Sutherland worked their way back into the contest and looked to have clawed one back with an indirect free-kick but the officials ruled it wasn’t touched by a Sharks player so no goal.
For their endeavor some brilliant work from Central Coast’s goalkeeper including a fingertip save stopped the comeback from the Sharks.
The Coast side added two further goals through an own goal and Matthew Smale to round out the 5-1 scoreline.
A late consolation for Arthur Kyriakides gave the Sharks side something to take home from their day out.

International Football School Futsal Club secured the Grade 13 girls in dominating fashion with a 5-1 victory against a gallant Sutherland Sharks side.
Once again, the scoreboard was troubled in the opening minute as IFS Futsal Club crashed home the opener through Leisel Collins to make it 1-0.
Some inventive work from the kick in by Chloe Barley gave the Sharks their lone goal of the contest. She spotted the defense not set and chipped the ball in to level proceedings.
It took nine minutes but IFS restored their lead as Camryn Millar finished off a nice movement as the competition front runners started to get in their groove.
Collins made it a brace as she slammed home a free-kick to make it 3-1 and reflective of the IFS sides dominance in this 13 girls final.
Mia McFarlane added a fourth a minute before the break, as she slotted the ball underneath the keeper for an imposing 4-1 lead.
Most of the damage was done in the first half and if not for the woodwork, IFS could have put their tally into double figures. Maddison Van Dijk rattled the post in the 34th minute before McFarlane squandered a pair of chances off the bar.
Overall, IFS were worth their victory and take home the 13 girls Futsal State League trophy.

Central Coast Futsal Club picked up their second victory of the day as the Grade 14 Boys ran out 6-4 winners in an entertaining contest at Valentine Sports Park.
The opening stages were cagey as both sides felt each other out. Western Wolves Emmanuel Dolo with the best chance but sent his stinging shot right at the keeper.
Jacob Farrell then had a pair of chances for the Central Coast firstly from a sweeping movement in the 6th minute before scooping a shot wide a minute later.
It took late in the first half as Nicholas Batarseh unleashed a rocket shot from deep that was too much for Wolves keeper Ashoram Shlemon to handle.
Batarseh added a spot kick just before the break after a succession of fouls from the Wolves in an affair that just started to warm up before the half-time buzzer.
There was enough time though for Jayden Anevski to claw a goal back with a nice strike which was aimed in firing up the toothless Wolves to that point.
Dolo had the perfect chance to restore parity after the break when he was found open from a 1-2 series of passes but it slid wide as the Wolves searched for the equaliser.
Learning from his miss in the first half, Farrell added the third for the Central Coast as he was quickest to the rebound. Batarseh added a finese finish in the 23rd minute to make it 4-1.
The confidence was flowing for Central Coast and they soon added a fifth when Jay Panapoulos arrowed home an effort which had the partisan crowd heaving with excitement.
Wolves continued to attack though, as Dolo struck back followed by Jacob Mantini’s third to make for a nervous last few minutes for the Central Coast.
Once again, Farrell was on hand to extinguish the comeback as he scored his second goal in a wonderful performance.
A late penalty converted by Dolo added some respectability to the scoreline but Central Coast were deserved winners this morning.

International Football School Futsal Club survived a spirited comeback from Central Coast Futsal Club to make it two from two on Futsal State League finals day.
It was the Central Coast that would open the scoring though, after a tense opening few minutes as Gemma Clegg scored directly from the corner for 1-0.
Nina Collins responded quickly for the IFS side as she slipped her effort underneath the goalkeeper to restore parity at 1-1.
From there, IFS took control of the contest. They scored three goals to blow away their Central Coast opponents.
Paris Blair, Emily Downs and Keziah White all got their names on the scoresheet as the IFS team worked the ball around comfortably.
Central Coast refused to go away though, as Clegg once again popped up to make it a brace and urged her team-mates to press on to find their way back into the contest.
The pressing from Central Coast started to make inroads as the pressure from a kick-in gave Jessica Hines the space to curl home a third goal for them.
IFS has their goal keepers to thank for the victory as they pulled off some crucial saves late in the contest including one that took a wicked deflection and Sian Johnston got down in time to claw it away.
Despite a late rearguard from the Central Coast Futsal Club, IFS continued their winning ways in a seven goal contest.

Central Coast Futsal Club edged a dramatic final that needed extra time and a Sasha Kuzevski penalty to separate two evenly matched teams.
It was a showcase for the goalkeepers in the first half – Brayden Gunn and Jeremy Read respectively pulled off some fantastic saves to keep things deadlocked at 1-1.
Both teams had chances from the spot which weren’t converted. Timothy Williams put his effort wide for the Western Wolves in a game of a few chances.
The second half saw the game open up a bit as Charlie Buffon slammed an effort against the post while Sasha Kuzevki’s smart turn and shoot also missed the target.
For the Wolves, they were denied time and again by Gunn as he dove acrobatically to take us into ten extra minutes. There was also a spectacular goal line clearance from Christopher Altueng which saved their blushes.
Fittingly it was Kuzevski that settled the contest as he was taken down three minutes into the first period of extra time. He dusted himself off and slotted the spot kick for 1-0.
Wolves had two big chances in the extra time to get level as Williams slashed wide again. Followed by Gabriel Esquivel’s header looped wide.
Kuzevski had a final chance to secure the tie when he had a second spot kick but this one was blasted wide.
Central Coast held firm though, and won a tense final 1-0 making it a perfect three for three for their club today.

Central Coast Futsal Club produced a stirring comeback as they captured the 17 girls title in a seven goal thriller at Valentine Sports Park.
International Football School FS would be the first side to open the scoring as Aithne Morgan took her chance well as IFS looked to finish with a perfect record in the girls age groups.
The team from the Coast fought back well several times in the contest, as the lead switched four times in an engrossing contest.
Kaylah Kroemer had the equaliser as she scooted onto a pass and finished well to make it 1-1. Georgia Davis provided a smart finish to snatch the 2-1 lead.
IFS found an equaliser themselves right on the stroke of half-time as Jade McAtamney stormed onto a cut back make it 2-2.
The Football School were once again in the lead in the 27th minute, as Teal Kilbride was on the end of a flowing move as neither side could maintain an advantage.
Central Coast refused to quit, as they made it 3-3 with half a dozen minutes to play. Davis completed her brace when she crashed home. The game was getting stretched and the chances were coming thick and fast.
Unbelievably Central Coast retook the lead on 37 minutes as Georgia Davis made it a hat-trick with a powerful shot across the keeper for 4-3.
Sarah Piriz had the golden opportunity for IFS as she was presented with an open net but couldn’t nestle the shot inside the net. The perfect run of the school came to an end in a enthralling encounter but there is plenty to be proud of for the IFS.

South Coast Taipans FS continued their dominance in the AWD category as they put together a professional performance to down Mountain Majik FS 5-2 in an open contest.
In a fiercely contested game South Coast Taipans were the first side to settle through a set piece. David O’Grady stepped up and converted a spot kick to make it 1-0.
Both sides got their quick passing going early but Taipans would make it 2-0 just after 12 minutes. Mitchell Forrest with a clever finish past Ned McCabe in the Majik goal.
Ben Atkins was the heart of most of the Majik’s passing moves and it was fitting he opened the scoring for them. Atkins found space behind the defense and slotted it into the net.
Taipans responded in kind just after the break though, as O’Grady once again was on hand to finish for the South Coast side to stretch the lead to 3-1,
Christopher Pyne gave the Majik some hope as he made it 3-2 with eight minutes to play – setting it up for a fitting finale.
The Majik had McCabe to thank for staying in the contest, as he stood tall to deny John Ruiz twice with a handful of minutes to play.
It was third time a charm for Ruiz. From a lovely lofted pass from O’Grady, he was on spot to volley past McCabe and seal the 4-2 victory.
Captain Zachary Jones capped off the victory with a precise finish in the final minute of action as the Taipans made it a clean sweep this season.

Youth Men
Central Coast fought back in a highly competitive contest against a fluid SD Raiders, winning 2-1 thanks to a Bilal Belkadi brace.
SD Raiders fired out of the blocks in the Youth Men contest and had the ball in the back of the net after sixty seconds. Joshua Ortiz made space for himself and rocketed a shot past Riley Battle in the Coast goal.
The fluid passing game of the Raiders flowed as they prised open the Central Coast side several times. Joseph Fahmi was on the end of the move but couldn’t find the finishing touch.
Battle continued to repel the shots fired by the Raiders as he denied Oscar Shamoun one-on-one with a brave diving save. Raiders were in control but needed to finish their chances.
The wastefulness of the Raiders was punished two minutes before halftime. Bilal Belkadi rolled past his defender and finished with aplomb to send it to the break locked up.
Most of the second half was a tense encounter, as both teams tried to find an opening to get the vital second goal.
Once again, it was Belkadi for the Central Coast who pounced on an errant pass, swayed past the keeper and despite the defender’s attention poked home for a 2-1 lead.
The Raiders continue to press with Shamoun who was found with a precision pass wasn’t able to turn the ball home as the time ticked away.
Shamoun was the main focal point as the Raiders were again denied by last ditch defending – Central Coast counting down the seconds to the title.
As they pushed though, it left the gate open for the Central Coast and Jordan Lane pounced as he cushioned the ball into the net for a 3-1 lead.
There was a final twist in the contest as Battle, who came up large in many occasions denied Shamoun once but couldn’t the second as the ball touched in off the post for 3-2.
It was fitting that Battle had the final action of the game, as SD Raiders pushed their keeper out, the Central Coast custodian lobbed a perfect ball into the net for 4-2.

Central Coast ended their day on a victory after a 2-1 extra time success against International Football School FS in a tight contest.
Central Coast were the first to shoot in anger, as Letisha Waddell fired an effort right at Samantha Fulwood in the International Football School goal.
IFS continued to dominate possession but the Central Coast had most of the shots as a looping header was clawed away.
Letisha McCormack almost found an opening as she turned but some desperate Coast defending prevented her from getting on the scoresheet.
Next it was Oriana Keane combining with Tamar Felsch sending the latter away with a lofted pass but unable to find the finish.
Despite all the endeavor in the first twenty minutes, it was locked at 0-0 partially due to the heroics of the two custodians.
IFS found their way through the Coast defense five minutes into the second half as Roxanna Swanson-Manuel spied the gap and finished well for 1-0.
Central Coast continued to hustle and look for an equalizer – it came in the form of a direct free-kick from Haylie Eyers who blasted past the IFS wall to lock it up at one.
Into the dying embers, Keane tried to tee up Candice Phelan but her effort was deflected and wide. So it was onto extra time we went.
Central Coast were the ones to strike right on half-time in extra time. Georgia Davis stepped up from a direct free-kick and nailed it home.
Davis had the chance to end the game with her effort counter attacking from a IFS set piece but slashed it wide. IFS had their chance with ninety seconds remaining with a 1-2 move that couldn’t find the lunging dive of Jessica Garrett.
Central Coast held on for a gritty 2-1 victory over a well drilled International Football School FS side in the last Women’s contest of the day.

SD Raiders put on a stirring comeback late to snatch the Open Mens title from Parramatta Pumas with a 7-4 extra time victory in the final game of the Futsal State League finals.
It was an action packed opening half with four goals and plenty of commitment from both sides. Parramatta Pumas started the stronger with Ben Lam combining with Simon Zahra for the latter to slot the opener.
SD Raiders responded in kind as Jordan Figon showed off his athleticism first with an angled effort which was snaffled followed by a dinked finish to make it 1-1.
Following their first goal, SD Raiders were on top as they passed it around the Pumas side. Alan De Le Cuadra converted their advantage to make it 2-1.
Daniele Chiandotto snatched at a chance to make it three as the Raiders continued to pry open the Pumas with their slick passing.
Pumas responded well though, as the foul count racked up – they were given three chances at a spot kick.
The first for Zahra was slashed wide, the second was converted by Sahand Mehrkhavari for a 2-2 scoreline. A late red card for Franco Maya Valiente gave them the third chance.
Nazifi Matanagh stepped up once as the third taker for the Pumas but Raiders keeper Adrian Iorfino charged down the kick and saved the Raiders from going into the break behind.
After a frantic first 25 minutes, you could forgive both teams for coming out cagey but both were ready to do battle again. Pumas reclaimed their lead with a long pass finding Tom Kasunic to slot home.
Figon thought he had a brace after stabbing home from a foul kick but the referee ruled it needed to be retaken. Andre Shroeder couldn’t force home the retake as Pumas cleared.
Lam further compounded the frustrations of the Raiders as he doubled the advantage with ten minutes gone in the second stanza. Kasunic could have put Pumas out of sight but he sliced his attempt.
Pumas were rugged in defending their lead and racked up five fouls quickly which gave Nick Carle the chance to make it 4-3 from the spot. The former Socceroo put his effort right at Gianni Musumeci.
Right after the Pumas had their chance after a tug in the box. Nazifi Matanagh lined up the effort and gave it to Mehkrhavari to blast into the wall.
Chasing the game SD Raiders brought on their sweeper keeper but allowed Mehrkhavari to sweep home for a 5-2 lead.
Two goals in quick succession from John Fahmi’s 44th minute spot kick and Figon’s second of the evening set it up for a grandstand finish at 5-4.
De La Cuadra had the first opportunity from the spot after a handball but it pushed over. The Raiders quickly secured possession again and Chiandotto snuck the ball home for 5-5.
90 seconds left and Fahmi galloped clear before being brought down. Daniel Bragg took the resulting kick and blasted it against the post.
Some neat interplay found Figon alone in the area but the hulking striker couldn’t force it goalwards forcing the game into extra-time.
Big moments call for big players and SD Raiders had that through Nick Carle as he showed all his experience with a cool finish to make it 6-5 Raiders. Figon made his hat-trick to put SD Raiders on the brink of the championship.
The Raiders stayed composed and cool in the final five minutes and held on to secure a famous victory for their Futsal Club despite a late Ben Pollock goal.
