Sutherland Shire FA maintained their position on top in a barnstorming contest against Bankstown City Lions after another exciting round of action across the weekend.

Match of the Round: Inter Lions SC vs Nepean FC

Both teams were forced to share the points after a late Inter Lions goal by Sarah Mandile cancelled out a Alix Waddell opener.

Nepean FC missed their chance to go top of the table despite looking for a majority of the contest looking set for the three points.

The visitors got off to the fast start as Ellen Wheatley snapped off the first shot of the contest as Nepean FC looked to build on their impressive win over Sutherland Shire FA last week.

Soon they would make their early dominance count on the scoreboard. A swift move started by Jessica Elliott finished with Alix Waddell sweeping in at the back post to make it 1-nil.

On 19 minutes Inter Lions had their first chance of the contest when from a flick on Sarah Mandile couldn’t control her shot and sent it wide.

It was a game that was played between the two boxes and Nepean FC created a neat move from a short corner for Elliott to force Inter Lions keeper Selen Santoro into a save.

The best chance for Inter Lions in the first half came from a deflection as Taylor Mikaelian’s strike took a touch that almost wrong footed Nepean FC keeper Danielle Baretls but she claimed it well as Nepean FC took their lead into the break.

After the break Inter Lions started to push forward more against Nepean FC signalled by Zoe Zaczek early shot that forced Bartels into action again.

Inter Lions would get reward for their bright start to the second half in the 68th minute. A well swung in corner found the head of Sarah Mandile who headed home to make it 1-1.

Buoyed by the equaliser Angela Gardner pulled out a cheeky move when she spied Bartels off her line after a clearance so she tried to rocket one in from long range but it fell wide much to Nepean and Bartel’s relief.

As the game started to enter in the final stages, the intensity ramped up and for some quality last ditch tackles there might have been a winner tonight.

First substitute Natalie Lawrie was on hand to deny Mandile a brace with a textbook last minute tackle then it was Waddell who was denied for Nepean down the other end as the game ended as a pulsating 1-1 draw.

Afterwards Nepean FC’s coach was disappointed but upbeat about the result.

"We are the walking wounded currently especially losing a centre back today. Today was a chance to push but a draw is always better than a loss." He said.

For the Inter Lions coach he was pleased with the spirit shown in that second half.

"It was a great second half. We lifted and got our reward for it. On another day might have got a different result. I am so happy for the girls after that." He finished.
