Sydney FC Helping to Further Educate Coaches

Sydney FC have been very active in the ‘coach education’ space by running sessions for hundreds of aspiring coaches right across Sydney in the middle of the grassroots football season.

Sydney FC have been rather active in further educating coaches in the Gladesville Hornsby FA (GHFA) and Sutherland Shire FA (SSFA), with Northern Suburbs FA (NSFA) next in line to receive a model session from Sydney FC Academy Director Kelly Cross.

Sydney FC understands that they play an important role in engaging with the local Community in various capacities and are actively involved in the many football associations and large number of local grassroots clubs across metropolitan Sydney, as well as being less than a year into their first regional partnership with Football Wagga Wagga.

Part of the FFA Community Strategy is to improve the experience of participants across the game, whether it be players, coaches, referees and administrators of the clubs.

FFA have stated that 25% of coaches are promoters of football.

After running a session with a Spirit FC squad for the benefit of a large number of coaches from GHFA in May, Kelly Cross turned his attention to SSFA last Thursday night where the U15 girls team were put through their paces in front of many enthusiastic local coaches eager to learn.

When asked about the session and his approach to coaching, Kelly Cross stated.

“My aim was to deliver a model session which could be utilised by coaches at all levels, with a focus on scoring more goals.

“While conducting any session, I like to provide a range of football knowledge points based on the Sydney FC Academy philosophy, which are intended to assist those coaches looking for ways to assist their players in games.”

Not only are the sessions educating the coaches, but they are always a great learning experience for the young footballers being ‘coached’ and this was evident with how much you could see they were thinking throughout the session to solve the problem posed by Cross.

Spirit FC players as well as the players from the U15 SSFA girls team showed huge improvement.

“It has been encouraging to see the young players adapt so quickly and begin to make changes in behaviour that they can take into their football careers.”

On Thursday 15th of June, Cross will be running another session for the NSFA coaches and will be focussing on coaches within the Game Training Phase (Under 13 – 17).

This will be another unique insight into the Sydney FC way and the lucky team to experience being coached by Kelly Cross will be the Northern Tigers U15 squad.

The session will take place from 6pm-7:30pm at Charles Bean Oval, Lindfield. It is free and interested coaches can still register at http://education-a.sportingpulse.com/Entry/?EID=16709

The Sydney FC coach education sessions have been extremely well attended and the club will look to continue to run these throughout the grassroots football season to interested associations.
