Construction on what many people are calling it Fairfield’s own mini Centennial Park or to the football purists within the Southern Districts Football Association area as the “Theatre of Dreams” will commence as local council has given it the go ahead following Tuesday 26th of September’s Council Meeting for the Fairfield Showground precinct.

The design includes a significant revamp of the current facilities, and includes a football stadium with seating for 5000 people, a new all-weather synthetic football field for community and elite use, an AFL/cricket oval which has a big screen and stage for festivals and concerts, a golf driving range and a community amphitheatre at the southern end of the site.

As part of the upgrade, the old grandstand (near the main grandstand) will be demolished and the covered market area reduced to the south and extended to the north to include three basketball courts. There will also be an outdoor space for the markets and amusements rides and provisions for more parking.

Southern Districts FA Technical Director Rodney Galic was jumping with joy after hearing the news that the council approved the go ahead to what will be one of this state’s major football precincts.

“It will be a major footballing and sporting hub to rival anything else in Australia thanks to the hard work and passion of Mayor Frank Carbone and the entire Fairfield Council as well as the NSW State Government and our local football association President Andy Favaloro and Club Secretary Gino Marra for backing this wonderful vision which will leave a legacy for many generations to come.

“Major beneficiaries will be the Southern Districts Football Association who have put in a proposal to join a future ‘B’ League based out of this site.

“It is also being proposed as a future Socceroo home base to prepare for international matches.

“The two-major sporting high schools in the area Bossley Park and Westfields Sports High will also fight out many future Championship matches at the new footballing centre of excellence.”

Stage one of the project which will includes transforming the harness track into a synthetic football field and new amenities building is expected to be completed in two years.
