Twenty-eight teams from Sydney’s massive Summer Football scene converged on Valentine Sports Park on Saturday 9th of December for the fourth Summer Football Champion of Champions Festival.

Perfect playing condition, DJ’s and a healthy crowd were all in attendance in what was an amazing day for the round ball game at Football NSW’s official headquarters in Glenwood.

In its first feature in the Summer Football Champion of Champions format, the mixed competition drew a lot of interest in what was an extremely competitive group. Following from an enthralling 5-5 draw in the group stage, Nepean FA and Northern Suburbs FA faced off again in the Final with Northern Suburbs FA prevailing on this occasion 3-0.

The Men’s competition was a race to catch the high-flying APIA side who stormed through the Group Stage scoring a whopping 22 goals in the process. Pennant Hills would be their biggest challenge though escaping a three-way tie for first in Group 2 with Blacktown and Narellan and edging past Kellyville Kolts in the semi-finals. Last year’s runners-up battled hard against a fierce APIA outfit however it was the competition favourites who took the title in their first ever appearance at the event

APIA’s women’s team sought to match their male counterparts as they faced a high-flying St George FA in the Final. The girls from St George represented their Association, team and families with a lot of pride on an emotional day and took out their first Summer Football title and only the second team in the tournaments to lift the trophy ending Gladesville Sharks’ three-year dominance.

Football NSW Member Services Manager Matt Rippon was thrilled with how the day unfolded.

“Whilst the matches were extremely competitive, with all groups going down to the wire; the most pleasing thing to see what the players seemingly just enjoying a great social day and an ideal way to end their 2017 football seasons.

“This competition keeps getting bigger and better which is just symbolic of Summer Football itself; we had over 45,000 players this season which again is another significant growth and win for the sport.

A special thank you to our superstar DJ’s Amie Hess and Maple Behaviour who kept the crowd and players entertained all day and to the Nepean Referees Group who provided their finest for this event.
