Former Socceroo keeper Jim Fraser and Football NSW Coach Education Manager Oscar Gonzalez attended the Parramatta Street Football session held at Robin Thomas Reserve in the heart of the Parramatta CBD recently.

Gonzalez provided a model football session for the attendees which included enjoyable games with the aim of increasing physical activity and creating a relaxed learning environment.

The players then played games where each could show off their silky skills.

After the final game, Fraser offered a tear jerking discussion around how football shaped his life and the sacrifices he had to make in his own life to play football for Australia, outlining that life can often be neither fair or easy.  The players asked many questions including his favourite memory and how he managed to make it as a footballer.

The Big Issue’s NSW and ACT Coordinator for the Community Street Football Program, Sam Clark, was delighted with the day’s proceedings.

“The Big Issue magazine is a fortnightly, independent magazine that is sold on the streets by homeless, marginalised and disadvantaged people. We are a not-for-profit organisation, with all post-investment profits passed to The Big Issue Foundation.

“So days like this where the players feel they can connect with high profile personalities is a real motivator.”

Fraser equally was happy to have played a role in the outcome of what was an amazing day for every participant involved which included the former Socceroo handing out each player with a precious gift.

“I love to share my experiences of hardship and sacrifice to let people know that life can be hard and no matter what, football can provide a reason to fight on as you make lifelong friends in this game.

“The Western Sydney Wanderers jerseys were a gift from my partner and I for them to enjoy.”
