Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium was treated to a spectacle of talent over the weekend as local and community teams played against Australian Defence Force Futsal teams in the inaugural Football NSW Futsal Community Cup.

The Community Cup aimed at growing grassroots futsal and bringing diverse community groups together to enjoy the beautiful game. With the Defence Force teams in town, local teams were able to show them the quality of futsal in local centres in and around NSW.

IFPS (Iranian Futsal Players in Sydney) took out the men’s competition with an impressive unbeaten run winning all five games on both Saturday and Sunday. While the Indigenous Women’s futsal team took out the winning medals in the women’s competition narrowly beating the Airforce on goal difference.

Amin Palangi the Caption of IFPS was extremely appreciative of the tournament run to benefit local futsal players and local communities to assist in the growth of grassroots futsal.

“I want to thank the Australian Defence Force for their continuous service and for coming here today, we have had a great time playing against respectful and passionate teams.

“For us its more than just Futsal, it’s about bringing people together whether they have just arrived in Australia or have been here for several years”

Teams that competed in the community cup include IFPS, Identical Tigers, Agedashi FC, Army, Airforce, Navy and Mixed Mob (Indigenous Women’s Team).

Futsal Manager, Demelza Howard was impressed with the way all teams conducted themselves over the course of the two days.

“The quality of futsal from our local centres was outstanding, the defence force teams had their work cut out for them. It as great to see the indigenous women’s team come into the tournament to play as well.”

A huge thank you to Indoor 5’s, Hawkesbury YMCA and The Australian Defence Force and NSW Futsal Referees Association for coming together for a wonderful tournament of Futsal.
