Lilli Pilli Claim 2019 Frank Broughton Cup

Frank-Broughton-Cup

Lilli Pilli have triumphed over local rivals Marton FC and claimed the Frank Broughton Cup in an entertaining clash on Sunday morning.

Lilli Pilli started with a point to prove, controlling possession and creating many of the game’s chances early on. However, they could be forgiven for a few nerves as they seemed to have met their match in Marton FC keeper Brodie Herron.

He could only hold them out so long though and the resistance broke just before the quarter hour mark. And it was broken spectacularly from a Lewis Freeman free kick which curled into the near side netting leaving the goalkeeper with no hope.

That sparked a reply from Marton, the ‘Hammers’ responding in style through Ned Gemmell who scored a spectacular individual effort. The attacker weaving between the oppositions defense before finishing into the bottom left corner.

They say the worst time to concede is before the half time break though, and Lilli Pilli halted any momentum Marton had acquired with a body-blow. Solomon Freeman took advantage of some room outside the 18-yard-box, his shot beating the keeper despite a valiant effort to deny him.

As time ticked on during the second half. Marton FC threw more and more players forward in the hope of an equalizer. And despite coming close specifically through the efforts of Hamish Bailey and Jackson Taylor, their efforts came to no avail.

Instead the further trouble to the scoresheet was to come from Lilli Pilli and William Crowe. After having the ball played into him, Crowe maintained his feet and finished with class not expected of his age which commenced the celebrations.
