The Australian Powerchair Football side have been crowned 2019 Asia-Pacific Oceania Zone Champions after winning all four of their matches which has also qualified them for the 2021 FIPFA World Cup.

The three-day Championships which kicked off on the 23rd of October at the Quay Centre saw the Australian side battle against the Kiwis, Japan and the Australian Under 21s where they won four out of four asserting its superiority throughout the tournament.

The Australians did take on the Green and Gold Under 21’s outfit as well but they were merely an invitational team and were ineligible for competition points.

Australia took out the APO Cup title in style without conceding a goal in competition play while runners-up Japan also qualified for the 2021 FIPFA World Cup, with a hard-fought 0-0 draw with New Zealand, enough to clinch them a World Cup spot.

Australian Powerchair Football Association’s Peter Turnbull was ecstatic with the national team’s Championship winning success.

“It was a great day for Australian Powerchair football when we competed a clean sweep of the tournament culminating in a 3-0 victory over Japan.

“We had 4 wins from 4 games and did not concede a single goal.

“We are so proud of each and everyone of our players.

“Their success was fully deserved and was the result of 6 months preparation for this tournament.

“We now move onto the World Cup in Sydney in 2021 where we will be attempting to improve our number four ranking and hopefully make the Final of the World Cup.”
