National Indigenous Football Championships ends off on a bang

What a memorable few days it was as the South Nowra Complex hosted the coveted 2019 National Indigenous Football Championships that drew to a close on Saturday as Champions were crowned in both the All Men and Women competitions as well as the much hyped celebrity match that took shape.

After a gruelling few days of football action, Saturday was the final day of competition for the senior men and women teams that participated in the tournament as the semis and finals took place in front of a healthy local crowd.

Prior to the big dance, a great annual celebrity clash warmed up the big occasion, a match that drew many of the local elders, coaches, managers, staff and other community members.

The Women’s Grand Final soon followed and what an epic match it was.

The Illawarra Bungarras ran out 3-2 winners in a thriller against the Newcastle Allstars as tournament awards were given soon after the final with Brittany Ring clinching the Kyah Simon Golden Boot while Jess Garrett was named MVP of the competition.

More end to end action ensued the women’s in the men’s category as the Northern Nations FC side defeated the Dhubu Dinawans in a quality football encounter 3-2.

The Northern Nations swept the individual awards as Matthew McNab took out the Jade North Golden Boot while McNab scooped the MVP award as well.

It was a fitting end to what was yet another brilliantly run National Indigenous Football Championships with many participants already anticipating the 2020 version.
