Granville & District Soccer Football Association has announced that its historic Cottam Cup competition is set to go ahead.

Established in 1907 and known as the oldest Football Knock Out competition in Australia, the Cottam Cup will most certainly attract more clubs wishing to play in what will be a memorable period for the game after COVID-19 temporarily put a hold on the season and sport.

“Having survived two World Wars and a bunch of pandemics, we were worried that in the year our Association celebrates its 120th anniversary, that the historic Cottam Cup would not be played and would be another victim of COVID-19”, said Association Board Member Noel Dona.

“But the community has flattened the curve and we can now play for Johnny and hopefully keep him home.”

The Cottam Cup is named after Private John William Cottam, a champion striker from the powerhouse Granville Magpies team who died in France in 1917 serving his country.

Last year the local Holroyd Rangers team defeated the defending Champions Inter Lion FC from the Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association to win the Cup for their first time and brought Johnny home.

“Last year was an epic and emotional final that showcased the very best our game has to offer. From that success, now more teams across the State want a play for the Cup and make history,” stated Dona.

The Granville Association were worried that with all Associations condensing their seasons into such a short time, clubs would not be able to participate but Dona reiterated that now was the time to get involved in registering your team for the prestigious knockout competition.

“The excitement is definitely still there and the clubs had no hesitation in re-committing.

With the State Cup competitions cancelled for this year, the Cottam Cup is the only competition that brings together the opportunity for all Associations to play in a knock competition.”
