Round 19 for the League One Womens competition was another wonderful exhibition of football across the eight games.

The fight for the finals continues as the ladder remains logjammed in the middle portion.

Let’s get onto the review!

Match of the Round: Marconi Stallions 1 defeated by Gladesville Ravens 4

Gladesville Ravens got back into the winner’s circle with a comfortable 4-1 win against Marconi Stallions on Sunday afternoon.

Marconi Stallions were matching the competition leaders for much of the first half and equalised at 1-1 when Ceyda Cambaz scored. The Stallions were unable to keep that up in the second half and fell away in the contest.

It was a return to form for Gladesville Ravens. After their loss last weekend, they had the perfect start when Gemma Woolley poked home then Lara Brewis made it 2-0 at the break. Anja Seeto and a bomb from Georgia Vlangos kept the visitors in the fight for the Premiership.

Coming off their loss last week, Gladesville Ravens started the game in perfect fashion. A wonderful cross from Elizabeth Gilbane found Gemma Woolley to tap home for 1-0.

Not content to sit on their lead, the Ravens kept their foot on the pedal. Georgia Vlangos had a shot from range then Keiko Tanaka teased one onto the head of Woolley who craned the header wide of the mark.

Woolley continued to be involved in the contest. She turned provider for Ravens captain Zoe Zaczek who forced Stallions keeper Isabella Sollecito into a fantastic save.

Ravens kept peppering the Stallions defence with Woolley having a pair of chances which were both saved well to keep the Stallions in the contest.

Marconi did find a sucker punch in the 39th minute. It was their striker tandem who combined with Tania Baban threaded a pass to Ceyda Cambaz who fired home to make it 1-1.

The Ravens did wrestle back the lead just before the half-time whistle. Woolley played in a wonderful ball to a rushing Lara Brewis whose first time shot trickled in to make it 2-1.

Looking to once again find an equaliser, the Stallions were the first side to register a shot in the second half which was taken well by Ravens custodian Romina Parraguirre.

On the hour mark, Baban weaved past several Ravens defenders but put her shot right at Parraguirre as the game started to stretch.

Parraguirre was on hand again to deny Baban in the 67th minute with a reflex save from close range on the Stallions striker to maintain their 2-1 lead.

Gladesville Ravens gave themselves a two-goal advantage with a close range finish from Anja Seeto after another good cross from Woolley that made it 3-1.

Georgia Vlangos put the icing on the cake for Gladesville Ravens tonight. She was given some space from about 25 yards out and unfurled a long-range effort that gave them a 4-1 lead.

Speaking post-match Marconi Stallions coach was happy with his team’s effort against a tough team despite being down on troops:

“I thought we were in the game for the first half. We made a few mistakes and paid the price for them in the second half. I fielded the best team I could due to sickness and injury and the team fought hard in the game.” said Severin.

For Gladesville Ravens coach Andrew Galbraith, he surmised it as a game of two halves and was happy his side finished the game off:

“It was a game of two halves tonight. We dominated the play in the first half without much end product which was frustrating for us. I asked for greater focus and application in the second half and we got that in the second half.” said Galbraith.

“To bounce back is a good sign of a team that wants to win. It was commendable for the side and we need to take that into our game next week.” finished Galbraith.
