Round 9 Review – League One Women’s

Round 9 in the Football NSW League One Womens was filled with goals and drama which saw the top four keep their momentum going over the chasing pack.

It was also a weekend which saw six of the seven away teams take the points.

Let’s get onto the review.

Match of the Round: South East Phoenix FC 1 defeated by Hills United FC 7

Hills United FC headed back up the highway and recorded a 7-1 win over South East Phoenix FC at South Nowra Football Complex on Sunday afternoon.

South East Phoenix FC battled hard but were beaten by a clinical Hills United FC in this contest. They did pull it back to 2-1 through Jasmine Tan in the first half. Otherwise, they had few chances to cut further into the deficit.

The visitors did most of their damage in the first half. Imogen Lane scored in the first minute before Stefanie Trovato made it 2-0. Isabella Sciberras fired home a double then Juri Hiragawara made it 5-0 at the break. Trovato and substitute Ellen Berios rounded out the scoring in the second half.

Hills United FC got the perfect start within the first minute. Imogen Lane found some space and bent a ball into the bottom corner and it was 1-0 to the visitors.

It was double delight for Hills United FC in the fifth minute. Isabella Sciberras cut the back back for Stefanie Trovato to dig it home for 2-0.

The visitors continued to have the lions share of chances with Aisling Davidson and Juri Hiragawara both dragging shots wide of the mark.

Sciberras who set up the second goal tried her luck. She skipped past a defender and forced South East Phoenix FC custodian Anna Simon into a save.

South East Phoenix FC did pull a goal back in the 23rd minute. The ball broke well for Jasmine Tan who slotted the ball home to make it 2-1.

Stung by conceding, Hills United FC restored their advantage quickly. Sciberras with a quality first touch then her second was her firing into the net for 3-1.

Hills United FC continued to dominate and added a fourth in the 28th minute. Sciberras again found space and put the ball in the back of the net to make it 4-1.

They added a fifth just after the half hour mark. Juri Hiragawara was released from a cushioned through ball and calmly fired home to make it 5-1.

South East Phoenix FC had a few half chances to chip into their deficit but their efforts weren’t on target as the game headed to half-time.

Coming out of the break, Hills United FC felt just fine. Stefanie Trovato chipped the ball into the net to make it 6-1 in the 52nd minute.

Amanda Carney was the central figure for South East Phoenix FC. She strode confidently towards the area and tried to chip Hills United FC keeper Sarah Easthope but she was able to gather.

Hills United FC went close to a seventh goal twice. Bianca Galayini hit the crossbar then Sciberras had an effort right at Simon.

The visitors were in seventh heaven in the 79th minute. Sciberras got past her defender and squared it for substitute Ellen Berios to tap home for 7-1.

South East Phoenix FC keeper Simon was forced into a pair of good stops. The first was from substitute Kaylie Shannon’s header then a shot from the right side of the box.

Nepean FC 0 defeated by St George FC 3

St George FC strode to a comfortable 3-0 win over Nepean FC at Cook Park on Sunday afternoon.

That made it back-to-back wins for St George FC in their climb up the ladder. Kyla Vanderlaan led the way for St George FC with a first half brace which had them on their way. Before Morgan Maxwell got her name on the scoresheet to round off the display.

Nepean FC were disappointed in their performance in the last few weeks after they hit a purple patch earlier in April. The side struggled to retain the ball and create much in attack which saw them fall to their third loss of the season.

Inter Lions 0 defeated by South Coast Flame FC 2

South Coast Flame FC continued their strong form with a 2-0 win over Inter Lions at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors built on their magnificent form in recent weeks with back-to-back wins against a gallant Inter Lions side. Lulu Lozano opened the scoring before captain Rachelle Wang completed the win in the 87th minute.

Inter Lions battled hard but fell to another defeat on their home turf. They remain a work in progress but are improving each week. Custodian Emma Woodin and Zoe Katsionis were the two standouts in their defeat.

Camden Tigers FC 1 defeated by UNSW FC 8

UNSW FC ran rampant in their 8-1 win over Camden Tigers down at Ron Dine Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The students brushed off their Sapphire Cup disappointment with a ruthless display which keeps them atop of the League One Womens ladder. Hannah Charak led the way for UNSW FC with a four-goal haul in the rout.

Alongside her were goals from Amanda Levaskevich, Margaux Montegut and Hannah Beard while Hayley Marshall built on her work from last week with another goal. Camden Tigers did score a consolation goal to take something from the contest.

SD Raiders FC 0 defeated by Central Coast Mariners FC 1

Central Coast Mariners left it late but they won 1-0 against SD Raiders FC at Ernie Smith Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The Mariners were made to work for the three points against SD Raiders FC and only found the back of the net late in the contest. Kaitlin Murphy drove into the box and squared it to Chloe Smith who scored her seventh goal of the season.

SD Raiders FC were set up well and almost snuck out of this game with a point. They frustrated the Mariners attack and only conceded late in the game. Coach Linda Khamis will be pleased with their effort against a top side.

Blacktown City FC 1 defeated by Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC 4

Mt Druitt Town Rangers took local bragging rights in their crushing 4-1 win over Blacktown City FC at Landen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Rangers started to hit some form after a slow start to the season and they have already beaten their win total from 2022. Mt Druitt Town Rangers took a 1-0 lead going into the break with Makayla Crouch firing home in the 29th minute.

The visitors went on a scoring spree in the second half. Rita Boateng hit the post before she doubled the advantage then Holly Williams and Holly Pender rounded off the brilliant display from the home side.

Blacktown City FC weren’t able to build on their big win in the Sapphire Cup against one of their local rivals on Sunday afternoon. Ella Morris pulled it back to 2-1 with her goal on the hour mark but it wasn’t enough in this game.

Sutherland Shire FA 2 defeated Marconi Stallions FC 1

Our night cap for Round 9 saw Sutherland Shire FA win 2-1 over Marconi Stallions at Seymour Shaw on Sunday night.

Sutherland Shire FA put the goalless draw from last weekend behind them with a solid win over an improving Marconi Stallions side. Tahli Fowler scored both goals for the side who consolidated their spot in the top four.

For Marconi Stallions, they pulled a goal back late through Yurina Koyama who turned well and put the ball top corner. Koyama had a late free-kick which could have claimed the draw, but it was cleared off the line by Sutherland Shire FA.
