Round 17 in the Football NSW League One Womens competition delivered some fabulous football and results which helped to shake up the ladder.

There were seven games played on Sunday afternoon headlined by the Match of the Round between South East Phoenix FC and Sutherland Shire FA.

Let’s get onto the review.

Match of the Round: South East Phoenix FC vs Sutherland Shire FA

Sutherland Shire FA took three points back up the highway in their 2-1 win over South East Phoenix FC at South Nowra Football Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts put in a solid performance in this home game. They found an equaliser in the 34th minute through Madison Cater to bring it back to 1-1. South East Phoenix FC had chances in the second half but couldn’t get something from the game.

For Sutherland Shire FA, they get back in the winner’s circle with a vital three points. Valentina Alvarez highlighted the performance with her brace with goals in the 32nd and 69th minute. Zoe Hart had a chance to get a third but put her penalty wide.

Both South East Phoenix FC and Sutherland Shire FA walked onto South Nowra Football Complex keen to get themselves three points on a sun-drenched winter afternoon.

South East Phoenix FC were the first side to challenge the keeper. They had a header taken easily by Sutherland Shire FA keeper Jasmin Lawler then Jasmine Tan shot over.

The hosts continued their fast start. Bronte Wright found some space before she unfurled a shot which flew over the crossbar.

Sutherland Shire FA started to find their rhythm in the 24th minute. Tahli Fowler strode confidently into the box and fired a shot which forced South East Phoenix FC keeper Lauren Trenerry into a save.

The visitors opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Valentina Alvarez ran into the box on the left and fired into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 for Sutherland Shire FA.

Before the celebrations could die down, South East Phoenix FC found an equaliser. Jasmine Tan threaded the ball through for Madison Cater to slide home for 1-1 in the 34th minute.

Sutherland Shire FA looked to take the lead again just before the break. Ariane Brown got into some space and crashed an effort against the crossbar.

The hosts had another fast start in the second half. Madison Cater had an effort which went right into the hands of Lawler.

Despite this, Sutherland Shire FA almost were gifted the lead again. Alvarez was able to snatch the ball from the defence but fired her effort wide of the post.

The visitors picked a nice time to retake the lead. Alvarez was on the spot to fire home in the left corner to make it 2-1 for Sutherland Shire FA in the 69th minute.

Sutherland Shire FA had a chance to get a two-goal advantage from the spot. Angela Mastoris was fouled in the box then Zoe Hart stepped up and sent her spot kick wide in the 79th minute.

Substitute Lily Warnes got straight into the action for Sutherland Shire FA. She strode into the box and her shot was taken well by Trenerry.

South East Phoenix FC pushed towards the final whistle but weren’t able to find a second equaliser to get a share of the points on Sunday afternoon.

South Coast Flame FC 3 defeated Camden Tigers 0

South Coast Flame triumphed under the lights 3-0 over Camden Tigers at Sir Ian McLennan Park on Saturday night.

The Flame got back in the winner’s circle in comfortable fashion over the Tigers in some Saturday night football. It was a tightly fought first half before the hosts found the opener through Lisa Prior in the 41st minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The hosts made it double delight in the 58th minute through Cristina Barraza then a late goal from Emily Kostovski rounded out the scoring for South Coast Flame FC. The result moves them equal on points with fourth place St George FC.

St George FC 1 drew with UNSW FC 1

Points were shared in the 1-1 draw between St George FC and UNSW FC at Ilinden Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The students looked to keep up their chase on Central Coast Mariners but St George FC lived up to their nickname as the ‘comeback queens’ with another late goal. The game was locked at 0-0 at the break between two top quality sides.

UNSW FC took the lead in the 58th minute through Hannah Charak and were on course for three points until St George FC got a late corner. It was swung in and turned home by Jordan Baker to snatch a point for the hosts and maintain their spot in the top four.

SD Raiders FC 1 defeated Mt Druitt Town Rangers 0

SD Raiders FC won 1-0 over a wasteful Mt Druitt Town Rangers side at Ernie Smith Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The result makes it back-to-back wins for SD Raiders FC as they plot their way back up the League One Womens ladder and into the top four. The first half was a tight tussle between the two and they went into the break at 0-0.

SD Raiders FC got the winner in the 55th minute. Abigail Boag found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Mt Druitt Town Rangers pushed for an equaliser but were made to pay for being wasteful in front of goal.

Inter Lions 1 defeated by Central Coast Mariners 2

Central Coast Mariners maintained their lead at the top with a 2-1 win over Inter Lions at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The Mariners battled through sickness in the squad to get three points to widen the gap to the chasing pack on the ladder. Lethal striker Chloe Smith scored either side of half-time to hand the Mariners a 2-0 advantage.

Inter Lions were able to battle back through Riley Dennis who netted in the 50th minute to make it 2-1 and set up a grandstand finish. Central Coast Mariners were able to hold on for a vital win to continue their charge to the Premiership.

Marconi Stallions 0 defeated by Nepean FC 3

Nepean FC were comfortable 3-0 winners over Marconi Stallions in their game at Wanderers Football Park on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors secured back-to-back wins in fine style and kept up their chase for the top four in the League One Womens competition. Nepean FC set the tone in the first half with a pair of goals too Maria Serrant to give them a 2-0 advantage.

Serrant completed her hat-trick with a goal in the 65th minute to round off a terrific display from Nepean FC to continue their improvement under Ben Gough. The Stallions weren’t able to build on their win last week but did get to give time to some of their young talent.

Blacktown City FC 0 defeated by Hills United FC 1

Rounding off the action was Hills United FC winning 1-0 over Blacktown City FC at Landen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Hills United FC were forced to remain patient against a stubborn Blacktown City FC defence and got the only goal of the contest in the first half. Brooke Hastie scored in the 20th minute to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

The visitors weren’t able to add to their goal in the second half but did take three points and inched them closer to the top two. Blacktown City FC battled hard across the game but weren’t able to get past Hills United FC custodian Sarah Easthope who picks up another clean sheet.
