Round 7 Review – League One Women’s

Round 7 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was a full card of matches to absorb across the weekend.

There were seven games this weekend which saw wins for Central Coast Mariners, Marconi Stallions, Bankstown City Lions FC, Blacktown City FC and SD Raiders FC in our Match of the Round.

Let’s get onto the review.

Match of the Round: Mt Druitt Town Rangers 1 defeated by SD Raiders FC 3

SD Raiders FC were 3-1 winners against Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC at Popondetta Park on Sunday afternoon.

Mt Druitt Town Rangers will be disappointed in their display against a fellow top four contender this season. Rosaria Galea did author a moment of magic in the 67th minute with her long range strike to give them hope at 2-1.

SD Raiders FC remain unbeaten with a strong second half effort. Taiana Almeida made it 1-0 in the 52rd minute then Elin Rosenberg Cemazar doubled the delight in the 56th minute. Miriam Zumaya sealed the result with her 87th minute strike.

Both Mt Druitt Town Rangers and SD Raiders FC walked onto a sun drenched Popondetta Park for an important clash in Round 7.

The Town Rangers had a shot within the first minute. Isabella Williams wriggled free from her defender and had a shot straight to SD Raiders FC custodian Natasha Pentecost.

Next, Rosaria Galea tried to get the opener. She unfurled a shot which rattled the crossbar and bounced away in the 4th minute.

SD Raiders FC settled into their rhythm and used the width well. Elin Rosenberg Cemazar cut inside and shot straight at Town Rangers keeper Renee Krstanovska.

The visitors started to rack up the corners and possession in the first half. They had a few corners which saw them challenge Krstanovska with some shots.

Town Rangers skipper Leena Khamis had a few efforts trying to open the scoring. Both her efforts went straight to Pentecost.

The combination between Sarah Mandile and Amanda Radmilo on the right gave them some space to have a shot on target each.

SD Raiders FC finished the half stronger with the last effort. Rosenberg Cemazar dug out an effort which forced Krstanovska into a diving stop in the 38th minute.

The visitors picked up where they left off right from the whistle. Sharina Harris cut inside the defender and curled one straight.

They kept probing for the opener. Rosenberg Cemazar this time, unfurled a strike which forced Krstanovska to tip it onto the bar.

They found the opener in the 53rd minute. Miriam Zumaya cut it back to Taiana Almeida who sent it into the top corner for 1-0 for SD Raiders FC.

Next, she turned provider to give SD Raiders FC a 2-0 lead. Almeida strode free on the right, found Rosenberg Cemazar on the edge of the box to drive it home.

The Town Rangers tried to produce a response to get back in the game. Galea combined with Williams with the latter striking it straight.

Galea produced a moment of magic to get Mt Druitt Town Rangers back into the contest. She spied the keeper off her line and chipped it in for 2-1 in the 67th minute.

The hosts pushed for the equalizer and looked to the main threat. Khamis turned well inside the box but thrashed it over.

SD Raiders FC almost sprung for a third goal. A quick throw found Rosenberg Cemazar inside the box and her shot was gathered by Krstanovska.

SD Raiders FC sealed the win in the 87th minute. Another lung busting run from Zumaya who glided past her defender and stroked it home for 3-1.

Speaking post match Mt Druitt Town Rangers coach Ben Gough reflected on the loss for his side on their home turf:

“Full credit to SD Raiders FC who played well and took their chances in the game. This was an opportunity for girls who haven’t got many minutes to impress but we’ll go back to the drawing board for next week.” said Gough.

For SD Raiders FC coach Bojan Radmilo, he spoke about a strong win for his side in warm conditions today:

“We dominated the first hour then got passive after conceding the goal which made it 2-1 but thankfully we got a third goal to take the win. Our goal is to be in every game and then try to win them with this young squad.” Said Radmilo.

South Coast Flame FC 0 defeated by Central Coast Mariners FC 1

Central Coast Mariners won 1-0 against South Coast Flame FC down at Sir Ian McLennan Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners bounced back with a solid win and became the second team to win down at South Coast Flame FC’s home ground this season. It was a tight tussle between two teams that have had solid starts to the campaign.

The visitors found the only goal of the game just before half-time. Andie Chaseling fired home in the 45th minute to make it 1-0. South Coast Flame FC threw everything at the Mariners in the chase for an equalizer in the second half but the visitors held on for three precious points.

Marconi Stallions 3 defeated Camden Tigers FC 2

Marconi Stallions won 3-2 against Camden Tigers in a pulsating game at Marconi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Stallions got back in the winner’s circle with their first win at Marconi Stadium for the 2024 season. The hosts opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Julia Figueira for 1-0 then Tania Baban made it 2-0 in the 35th minute for the half-time lead.

They sealed the win in the 73rd minute through substitute Ella Sievwright who made it 3-0 for the Stallions. Camden Tigers battled to the final whistle and pulled back two late through an own goal in the 82nd minute then sharpshooter Lisa Fressard made it 3-2 in the 94th minute.

Inter Lions FC 2 defeated by Bankstown City Lions FC 6

Bankstown City Lions FC were 6-2 winners against Inter Lions down at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions bounced back in tremendous form with this win away from their home ground. They did the damage in the first half leading 5-0 at the break. Aya Seino opened the scoring from the spot in the 5th minute then fired home again in the 25th minute for 2-0.

Roukayak Al Farajeh got in the action next with a hat-trick inside ten minutes. She made it 3-0 in the 41st minute then found the back of the net twice in stoppage time to round the first half display.

Inter Lions pulled back a goal in the 80th minute through first half substitute Santina Wang to make it 5-1 then Mia Micalizzi struck for 5-2 in the 88th minute. Goal machine Seino completed her hat-trick with a 92nd minute goal for a 6-2 Bankstown City Lions win.

South East Phoenix FC 0 drew with Nepean FC 0

Points were shared between South East Phoenix FC and Nepean FC in their 0-0 draw at South Nowra Football Complex.

Both teams will add another point to their account for the 2024 season in their chase to move further up the League One Women’s ladder. South East Phoenix FC have now earned back-to-back draws in recent weeks.

Nepean FC huffed and puffed but weren’t able to repeat their effort from last weekend which saw them pick up their maiden win. Coach Joseph Ellul will be pleased with the improvements the side have made.

Sutherland Strikers FC 0 defeated by Blacktown City FC 3

Blacktown City FC won 3-0 against Sutherland Strikers FC at The Ridge Sports Complex Field 10 on Sunday afternoon.

That results takes Blacktown City FC to four games unbeaten before they have their first Sapphire Cup game against UTS FC midweek. The visitors got the only goal of the first half from an own goal in the 24th minute for 1-0.

Blacktown City FC piled on the pressure again and forced another own goal from the Strikers this time from keeper Lucy Goss for 2-0 in the 50th minute. Olivia Moar rounded out the win with her goal in the 52nd minute for 3-0.

Hills United FC 1 drew with St George FC 1

Hills United FC and St George FC shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Bella Vista Public School on Sunday afternoon.

The Grand Final rematch delivered in spades with another quality contest between two of the top sides in the League One Women’s competition. St George FC struck first through Kyla Vanderlaan in the 19th minute for 1-0.

Hills United FC responded well to conceding and brought it back to 1-1 just before half-time through Isabella Sciberras. She struck in the 46th minute to level. The second half was frantic and could’ve gone either way. Alix Roberts hit the bar twice for Hills United FC while St George FC had their own chances in the contest.
