Round 22 Review – League One Women’s
Round 22 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was another fantastic edition which saw plenty of goals, action and late drama to enjoy.
There were seven games played on a windy Sunday afternoon highlighted by the Match of the Round between Sutherland Strikers FC and SD Raiders FC.

Match of the Round: Sutherland Strikers FC 5 drew with SD Raiders FC 5
Sutherland Strikers FC and SD Raiders FC shared the points in a 5-5 draw at Harrie Denning Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Sutherland Strikers FC take a point away in what was a pulsating contest. Tori Tumeth opened the scoring in the 11th minute then Leila Szszepanik made it 2-0 in the 26th minute before it became 3-2. Tumeth made it 3-3 in the 47th minute before a double from Lucy Johnson in the 61st and 89th minute made it 5-5.
SD Raiders FC showed tremendous spirit in a game which they weren’t at their best but take a point. Isabella Sultan brought it back to 2-1 in the 36th minute then strikes from Miriam Zumaya and Taiana Almeida completed the turnaround late in the first half. They took the lead again twice in the second half through Zumaya in the 53rd and Boag in the 84th minute despite a red card to Abuk Nyor.
Both Sutherland Strikers FC and SD Raiders FC walked onto Harrie Denning Centre in form and in the running for three points.
Tori Tumeth wanted to get the party started in the first time. She drove through midfield then had a tame shot right at SD Raiders FC keeper Natasha Pentecost.
SD Raiders FC authored their first chance of the game through Abuk Nyor. She found some space then had a curving effort fizz wide.
Sutherland Strikers FC made it 1-0 in the 11th minute. Tumeth started the move, exchanged passes with Georgie Lewis then took the return to fire home.
The Strikers buoyed by their goal surged forward. Lewis had an effort then KJ Schmidt nodded over from a corner.
Sutherland Strikers FC made it 2-0 in the 25th minute. Schmidt put in a teasing cross which found Leila Szszepanik to turn home.
The visitors pulled a goal back in the 26th minute. Isabella Sultan curled a free-kick inside the post to make it 2-1.
SD Raiders FC levelled the game soon after. Miriam Zumaya was in a pocket of space and looped an effort into the net for 2-2 in the 39th minute.
They completed the turnaround just before half-time. It came from a corner which Taiana Almeida smashed home for 3-2 in the 43rd minute.
Scmidt had a chance late in the half to level the game. She drove into space on the wing and dragged an effort wide.
Sutherland Strikers FC made a pair of changes at the break including substitute keeper Chaeli De Brincat and it brought an instant reward through Tumeth.
It came from another set piece. Lucy Johnson put in the free-kick which found the head of Tumeth for 3-3 in the 47th minute.
SD Raiders FC restored their lead in the 53rd minute. The corner was spilled into the path of Zumaya who tapped home for 4-3.
Sutherland Strikers FC kept pushing forward looking to get back in the contest with a few efforts at goal.
The task for SD Raiders FC was made tougher when Nyor saw red after she delayed the restart just before the hour mark.
Sutherland Strikers FC made instant impact with the extra player. Johnson strode in the box on the right and fired home for 4-4 in the 61st minute.
Tumeth continued to be the outlet for Sutherland Strikers FC. She galloped down the wing and tried to cut it back but it was swept away.
The Sky Blues star turned provider in the search for the lead. She released Schmidt who in turn found Johnson who took a touch and curled right at Pentecost.
Johnson was hungry for a second goal. She received the ball well again near the box and whistled it over the bar.
Sutherland Strikers FC went forward again looking for a fifth. Schmidt put the cross right into the path of Lewis who couldn’t turn home.
SD Raiders FC kept making chances despite being down to ten. Almeida fizzed wide then substitute Abigail Boag hit the left post.
Johnson had a golden chance to give Sutherland Strikers FC the lead. She was found well inside the box then flashed wide.
SD Raiders FC almost struck on the counter. Amanda Radmilo drove down the wing, found Almeida then it went to Elana Topalidis to shoot right at De Brincat.
The visitors made it 5-4 in the 84th minute to retake the lead. Boag was released behind again, rounded the keeper and slotted home.
There was one final twist in the game. Sutherland Strikers FC made it 5-5 when Johnson drilled home in the 89th minute.
Sutherland Strikers FC had a late surge to take all three points but the final whistle signaled the end of a breathtaking contest at Harrie Denning Centre.
Post match, Sutherland Strikers FC coach Chris Gallo reflected on the positive performance for his side tonight:
“It was a fantastic effort especially after making some changes in the second half. I thought we could have put the game away in the first half but we need to make sure we kill off games against good sides like that.” said Gallo.
For SD Raiders FC coach Bojan Radmilo, he was forthright in his opinion about his teams performance afterwards:
“Honestly, I think we should have lost that game this afternoon. We put in a good effort but we were second best across the whole game.” said Radmilo.

Bankstown City Lions FC 2 defeated South Coast Flame FC 1
Bankstown City Lions FC won 2-1 against South Coast Flame FC down at Jensen Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions bounced back with a big win which consolidates third spot on the League One Women’s ladder. Maya Miller scored to make it 1-0 for Bankstown City Lions FC in the 31st minute before Emily Kostovski drew Flame level in the 37th minute for 1-1.
Bankstown City Lions took all three points in the second half after Golden Boot leader Aya Seino made it 2-1 in the 68th minute. That was her 39th goal of the season and she has been a star for the Lions this season.
Camden Tigers FC 0 defeated by Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC 3
Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC won 3-0 against Camden Tigers FC down at Ron Dine Reserve on Sunday afternoon.
The Town Rangers made it back-to-back wins which leaves them alone at the top of the League One Women’s competition headed into the final month. All the action was in the first half as the visitors blew the Tigers away.
Trudy Camilleri found the back of the net in the 26th minute for 1-0 then Leena Khamis made it 2-0 in the 37th minute for the visitors. Khamis added the third goal in the 44th minute to round off the impressive half.
Marconi Stallions FC 3 defeated Blacktown City FC 0
Marconi Stallions were 3-0 winners against Blacktown City FC at Marconi Stadium #2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Stallions have recorded back-to-back wins to move closer to the top half of the competition. They were made to work for the points after a tight first half saw both teams head in at 0-0.
Erinn Cleghorn made it 1-0 in the 49th minute to continue her strong form in front of goal then Sarah Urquhart scored to make it 2-0 in the 55th minute. Eleni El Azar scored in her maiden First Grade start for 3-0 in the 58th minute in a rapid start to the second half.
Nepean FC 0 defeated by Hills United FC 3
Hills United FC won 3-0 against Nepean FC in their game down at Cook Park on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors hold onto their spot in the top four after a comfortable victory on a windy afternoon in the west. Goal machine Kaylie Shannon opened the scoring late in the first half to give Hills United FC the 1-0 lead at the break.
Hills United FC pushed forward for more goals in the second half but were held at bay until late in the contest. Shannon made it 2-0 in the 86th minute then substitute Ellen Berios made it 3-0 in the 87th minute to round off the win.
South East Phoenix FC 1 defeated by Inter Lions FC 2
Inter Lions FC won 2-1 against South East Phoenix FC down at South Nowra Football Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions picked up their second win of the season in Nowra and moved level with South East Phoenix FC on the League One Women’s ladder. Neither side could find the back of the net in the first half and It was 0-0 at the break.
Inter Lions FC found the back of the net in the 53rd minute through Emma Chiew for 1-0 before Sarah Kilby equalized for South East Phoenix FC to make it 1-1 in the 78th minute. The visitors snatched all three points in the 98th minute through Caitlin Webster for 2-1.
St George FC 4 defeated Central Coast Mariners FC 0
Rounding off the action was St George FC winning 4-0 against Central Coast Mariners FC on Sunday night.
The Saints keep up their chase of a potential top four spot and dealt a huge blow to the Mariners chances in this game. Janan Codmani made it 1-0 in the 32nd minute for St George FC and the hosts held that lead going into the break despite Mariners hitting the post.
St George FC marched towards victory in the second half. Codmani added the second in the 50th minute then Jordan Baker made it 3-0 in the 61st minute. Codmani completed her hat-trick for 4-0 in the 80th minute and cement fifth spot.
