Round 8 Review – League One Women’s

Round 8 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was filled with plenty of excitement and goals to whet the whistle.

There are six games to run the rule over including a dramatic Match of the Round between Blacktown City FC and Bankstown City Lions FC.

Match of the Round: Blacktown City FC 2 drew with Bankstown City Lions FC 2

Points were shared in a 2-2 draw between Blacktown City FC and Bankstown City FC at Landen Stadium on Saturday night.

Blacktown City FC battled hard and deserved a point from their performance after bouncing back from derby defeat. Jasmine Stretton gave them a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute before they were pegged back then Jessica Anand nodded home a stoppage time leveller for 2-2.

For Bankstown City Lions FC, they will be disappointed not to get all three points from this game after taking a 2-1 lead. Chelsea Greguric made it 1-1 in the 43rd minute then a superb free-kick from Stephanie Ambrose gave them a 2-1 advantage before the stoppage time scenes.

Blacktown City FC and Bankstown City Lions walked onto Landen Stadium aiming to collect three points after suffering defeat last time out.

It was the visitors who had the first shots. Both Chelsea Greguric and Karen Bennett fizzed efforts past the left hand post.

Blacktown City FC’s first shot of the game came from Olivia Moar who nestled an effort right into the hands of Bankstown City Lions FC keeper Jasmin Lawler.

That spurred the hosts forward looking for the opener. Amber Precious wriggled free and unfurled a shot at Lawler.

Heba El Saddik drove down the wing and glided into the area before she fired a shot into the side netting.

The game kept searching for the first goal. Zoe Zaczek was the next to test Lawler but the Lions custodian was able to handle.

Blacktown City FC made it 1-0 in the 39th minute. Ana-Liese Lobos initial shot was saved by Lawler same for the follow up from Precious but Jasmine Stretton was on hand to fire home.

The visitors responded in emphatic fashion for 1-1. Stephanie Ambrose whipped in a free-kick that Greguric nodded home in the 43rd minute.

The Lions almost snatched the lead in first half stoppage time. Another set piece from Ambrose found the head of Yumeka Yajima who craned it right at Blacktown City FC keeper Amy Harkin.

Blacktown City FC went close to taking the lead for the second time. Precious roamed free outside the box and blasted over.

Bankstown City Lions FC made it 2-1 in the 74th minute. Ambrose curled a free-kick around the wall into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround.

Greguric went close to giving them a two-goal cushion. She was played through but was unable to direct her chipped effort towards goal.

The hosts kept surging forward looking for a dramatic equalizer but the Lions defence held firm until the final minute of stoppage time.

A foul from Samantha Payne offered Blacktown City FC one final chance in a see-sawing affair to kick off Round 8.

Rhea D’Mello piloted the free-kick right onto the head of Jessica Anand who headed home for 2-2 in the 94th minute and snatch a point.

Post match, Blacktown City FC coach Michael Hawthorne was delighted with the effort from his side tonight:

“We went right to the last minute, dug deep and ended up getting something from it. We played some good football and building so this can be a stepping stone to more stuff. To get goals which had been alluding us was nice and credit to the girls.” said Hawthorne.

For Bankstown City Lions FC coach Ante Covic, he reflected on a disappointing display from his team:

“We lacked intensity in the first half despite having a few early chances but got back into the contest with the equalizer. We were off from our usual levels and unfortunately conceded late but that is how football goes.” said Covic.

South Coast Flame FC 0 defeated by Marconi Stallions FC 1

Marconi Stallions FC won 1-0 against South Coast Flame FC down at Sir Ian McLennan Park on Saturday night.

The Stallions put their first defeat behind them with a solid display which earned them their fifth clean sheet thus far in 2025. The visitors were made to made to work for the three points after a scoreless first half saw the teams go into the break at 0-0.

It seemed like the game might be headed towards a stalemate, there was one final twist in the tale for the Stallions. Sarah Urquhart fired home her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to make it 1-0. The visitors saw out the final stages to get a big win.

Sutherland Strikers FC 1 defeated by Camden Tigers FC 2

Camden Tigers FC won 2-1 against Sutherland Strikers FC in their game at Harrie Denning Centre on Monday afternoon.

The Tigers registered their first win of the 2025 League One Women’s campaign with a come from behind result in the shire. Neither team could break through in the first half and they went into the sheds at 0-0.

Sutherland Strikers FC made it 1-0 in the 61st minute through Keira Moukatas who netted her fourth goal of the season. Camden Tigers equalized through Lisa Fressard for 1-1 in the 66th minute then Ashlee Taff knocked it home from a corner for a 2-1 Tigers win in the 85th minute.

Inter Lions FC 0 defeated by SD Raiders FC 5

SD Raiders FC were 5-0 winners against Inter Lions FC down at Majors Bay Reserve on Monday afternoon.

The visitors have now gone five games unbeaten which leaves them in firmly in the League One Women’s top four. SD Raiders FC held a 1-0 lead at the break against a dogged Inter Lions FC outfit.

Both sides went for it in the second half and SD Raiders FC were the more clinical side and ran away with the contest. Tenealle Hay took the headlines with a hat-trick while Layne Knight and substitute Abuk Nyor also found the back of the net.

Nepean FC 0 defeated by St George FC 11

St George FC won 11-0 against Nepean FC in their contest played at Cook Park on Monday afternoon.

The Saints were clinical in front of goal and marched out to a large lead which saw them furnish their goal difference. Jordan Baker scored in the 8th, 13th and 29th minute to get a first half hat-trick and give St George FC a 3-0 lead.

Quickly, Baker added a fourth in the 32nd minute for 4-0 then Abbey-Rose Cryer found the back of the net for 5-0 in the 40th minute. Tayla Cvetkovski got her name on the scoresheet in first half stoppage time to hit Nepean FC for six.

Lauren Johnson made it 7-0 in the 47th minute then Janan Codmani fired home for an 8-0 St George FC lead in the 56th minute. Substitute Jaslyn Moore scored for 9-0 in the 62nd minute then fellow substitutes Genevieve Russo and Paris Alcorn tallied in the 71st and 80th minute to get St George FC past double digits for their 11-0 win.

Hills United FC 5 defeated Blacktown Spartans FC 0

Hills United FC won 5-0 against Blacktown Spartans FC down at Valentine Sports Park on Monday evening.

The League leaders remain on top due to goal difference and continue to be one of two sides unbeaten through eight rounds. Monique Holder opened the scoring in the 9th minute then sharpshooter Gemma Woolley made it 2-0 in the 15th minute for a two-goal half-time lead.

Hills United FC kept their foot on the throat in the second half which will please coach Alan Tasses after another big win. Jess Wootton made it 3-0 in the 77th minute before she doubled her delight for 4-0 in the 90th minute then Rachel Glendenning rounded it off for 5-0 in the 92nd minute.
