Football NSW Launches Inaugural Female Referees Mentoring Program

Football NSW has announced the launch of the Female Referees Mentoring Program, a pioneering initiative designed to support and develop female referees across the state.
This first-of-its-kind program builds on the foundation laid by recent NSW Football Legacy scholarship program initiatives, continuing to foster opportunities and promote gender diversity within football officiating.
The Female Referees Mentoring Program further demonstrates Football NSW’s commitment to developing female referees.
“Football NSW is committed to creating an inclusive environment that encourages women to thrive in all aspects of the game,” said Football NSW’s Referees Development & Education Manager Emma Kocbek.
“This mentoring program is a significant step forward in empowering female referees, providing them with the tools, confidence, and mentorship needed to succeed at higher levels. We believe that diverse refereeing panels lead to a more dynamic, fair, and engaging game for everyone.”
The Mentoring Program aims to provide a valuable platform for Level 3 and Level 4 female referees who will learn from experienced referees, enhancing their skills, confidence, and leadership qualities. Through personalised guidance, practical insights and ongoing support, these referees will be better equipped to excel in their careers and contribute to the growth of women’s participation in football officiating across NSW and beyond.
This groundbreaking Football NSW’s initiative aligns with its broader commitment to increasing female participation and leadership across all areas of the game.
By investing in female referees, Football NSW aims to inspire more women to pursue officiating roles and to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive football community.
“Government funding plays a crucial role in the successful implementation and growth of the mentoring programs,” said Football NSW’s Head of Women’s and Schools Football Hayley Todd.
“As participation numbers continue to rise, sustained investment is essential to ensure we are not only increasing the number of referees but also enhancing their skills and confidence.
“By prioritising this investment, we can build a more robust and well-supported sporting community that benefits players, coaches, and referees alike.”
Football NSW will be working alongside Referee Branches to identify mentors and mentees in the coming weeks.
This initiative is proudly supported by the NSW Office of Sport through the NSW Football Legacy Program and the Australian Government, Department of Health and Aged Care’s Play Our Way Program.
