Round 13 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was another excellent weekend with five games played on Sunday afternoon.
There were big wins for some of the contenders and vital points for those chasing them.
The round was headlined by Hills United FC and St George FC in the Match of the Round.
Let’s get onto the review!
Match of the Round: Hills United FC 1 defeated St George FC 0
Hills United FC won 1-0 against St George FC in their game at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.
The league leaders remain three points clear at the summit after another solid performance which saw them keep a clean sheet. Gemma Woolley was the lone goal scorer with her 23rd minute strike.
St George FC will be disappointed that they didn’t compete until to their usual standard across the 90 minutes. Their best chances fell to Golden Boot leader Jordan Baker and Janan Codmani in the contest.
Both Hills United FC and St George FC strode onto Valentine Sports Park ready to battle for three points.
St George FC were the side that settled first, holding much of the ball and probing for an opening in the stoic Hills United FC defence.
It was the hosts who had the first chance of the game. Elin Rosenberg Cemazar fired an effort right at St George FC keeper Caitlin Russell.
Hills United FC kept peppering Russell with shots as Tasmin Buchanan and Isabella Sciberras tried their luck.
The Saints did test Hills United FC keeper Sarah Easthope with an effort. Jordan Baker shooting straight at the custodian.
Janan Codmani went closer moments later. She drove into the box and flicked her effort against the apex of the post and crossbar.
Hills United FC made it 1-0 in the 27th minute. Gemma Woolley pounced on a loose touch then held off a defender to roll home.
That goal pushed Hills United FC forward for a second. Bella Donaldson floated in a free-kick which Brooke Hastie headed onto the bar.
The hosts held firm at the back and took a one-goal lead into the break as they look to maintain their lead at the top of the league.
St George FC came out in the second half looking to squash that dream. Tayla Cvetkovski wriggled free and shot over the bar.
Next, the ball fell to Bianca Galayini inside the box for Hills United FC and the attacked whipped it right at Russell.
Substitute Jess Wootton was keen to make an impact for Hills United FC. She weaved past several defenders before whistling past the left post.
St George FC rung the changes to get themselves back in the game but the Hills United FC defence remained stout.
The host were not content to sit on their lead. Donaldson shot straight then Wootton pushed another effort beyond the post.
Hills United FC saw out stoppage time and maintain their three-point lead at the apex of the League One Women’s ladder.
Post match, Hills United FC coach Alan Tasses reflected on a good win for his side against tough opposition:
“It is always tough against St George FC, we are two even sides. We got away with it tonight and it was a good goal from [Gemma] Woolley which decided the game. I am happy to take the points and move to next week.” said Tasses.
For St George FC coach Mark Greenfield, he was left puzzled at his side not being at the races in the game:
“We gifted them a goal which you can’t do against good sides. We didn’t execute well and went to the long ball too often. Second half we played our way, creating a few chances but weren’t dangerous tonight.” said Greenfield.
