Round 15 Review – League One Women’s

Round 15 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was another weekend which saw plenty of action and goals across the six games.

There were wins for Hills United FC, Blacktown Spartans FC, South Coast Flame FC and Sutherland Strikers in a round which was headlined by the Match of the Round between St George FC and Marconi Stallions FC.

Let’s get onto the review.

Match of the Round: St George FC vs Marconi Stallions FC

St George FC and Marconi Stallions FC had a 1-1 draw in their game at Barton Park on Sunday evening.

The Saints will rue their missed chances in the first half which could have given them all three points. Danielle Rutstein did give them the lead in the 21st minute before the hosts were pegged back in the second half.

Marconi Stallions FC showed superb defensive resilience to get something from the contest after defending much of the first half. Pene Bonovas equalised in the 53rd minute for 1-1 with a good free-kick in the draw.

St George FC and Marconi Stallions FC walked onto Barton Park with three points on their mind in this contest.

The hosts authored the first chance of the contest through Tayla Cvetkovsi. She found some space and fired an effort over the bar.

St George FC kept up the pressure in the early stages. A through ball put Danielle Rutstein through on goal but she was denied by Marconi Stallions FC keeper Isabella Sollecito.

Next, the leading goal scorer in League One Women’s tried her luck. Jordan Baker the ball inside the area and whipped an effort into the side netting.

St George FC made it 1-0 in the 21st minute. Janan Codmani threaded through a ball which Rutstein fired home off the post.

Buoyed by their goal, St George FC pushed ahead again. Rutstein shot straight then Codmani put her effort right at Sollecito.

The Stallions found their rhythm in the contest and had a few half chances in the first half but didn’t trouble St George FC custodian Emilija Vidakovic.

The Saints tried to double their advantage before the break. Abbey-Rose Cryer nodded a header wide.

Baker had the final chance of the first 45 minutes. She whipped in a free-kick forced Isabella Sollecito into a diving take to keep it at 1-0 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Stallions felt just time. They started to make incursions inside the box looking for a leveller.

The Stallions did make it 1-1 in the 53rd minute from the set piece. Pene Bonovas curled her free-kick into the left corner past a diving Vidakovic.

St George FC looked to wrestle back the lead right away. Baker put her effort right at Sollecito right after the equaliser.

The Stallions were keen to complete the turnaround in the game. Marie Herrera put her shot right at Vidakovic then Hannah Tomelic craned her header at goal.

Both sides rung the changes and produce one final effort that could earn them all three points in the Match of the Round.

The Saints brought on substitute keeper Caitlin Russell and the shot-stopper was called into action immediately to cut off a dangerous ball from the visitors.

Marconi had another free-kick late in the contest. Bonovas piloted in the set piece which found the head of captain Daniela Brekic who couldn’t find the net.

The two sides fought until the end but the final whistle blew in the 95th minute and the two sides shared the points in a captivating contest.

Post-match, St George FC coach Mark Greenfield reflected on their performance which felt like dropped points:

“We weren’t clinical enough in front of goal in the first half which has been a thing for us in recent weeks. We changed our formation and style to combat Marconi when it become a battle in the second half.” said Greenfield.

For Marconi Stallions FC coach Mark Beauchamp spoke on a solid outing from his side to get a point in the game:

“We battled until the end after starting slow with conceding the goal. The girls fixed it themselves and we were strong. It could have gone either way in the second half and I think it was a fair result.” said Beauchamp.

South Coast Flame FC 2 defeated Blacktown City FC 1

South Coast Flame FC won 2-1 against Blacktown City FC down at Sir Ian McLennan Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Flame burned brightly to earn three points in the contest. The hosts opened the scoring in the 2nd minute for 1-0 through Bessie Riethmuller after a superb back heel from Emily Kostovski then Rhea D’Mello levelled for Blacktown City FC in the 21st minute for 1-1 latching onto a through ball from Zoe Zaczek.

The hosts regained their lead in the 58th minute through Abbey Crapp. The striker swept home from a Christina Barraza corner for 2-1. The task was made more difficult for Blacktown City FC when Zaczek saw red in the 59th minute as the Flame saw out the remainder of the game without incident to take the win.

Blacktown Spartans FC 2 defeated Bankstown City Lions FC 1

Blacktown Spartans FC won 2-1 against Bankstown City Lions FC at Blacktown Football Park on Sunday afternoon.

That makes it back-to-back wins for Blacktown Spartans FC in their quest to have an improved showing in the second half of the season. Both their goals were scored by Danielle Keller, one coming from the hosts press and the other a composed finish inside the box.

For Bankstown City Lions FC, it breaks a four-game sequence which saw them alternate between wins and draws. They did find the back of the net in the game through Karen Bennett for her first goal of the season.

Central Coast Mariners FC 2 drew with Camden Tigers FC 2

Points were shared in a 2-2 draw between Central Coast Mariners FC and Camden Tigers Fc at Pluim Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams will add a point to their tallies but the Mariners might fell like it was two points dropped at home. The Mariners went up 1-0 in the 16th minute from Natalia O’Driscoll before Chantelle Barnard scored for Camden Tigers FC in the 26th minute when she rounded the keeper and slotted home for 1-1 at the break.

The Mariners once again took the lead in the 53rd minute through Peyton Scollay for 2-1 which had them on their way to three points. The hosts gave away a free-kick close to the box in the 62nd minute which allowed Deana Caronna to curl home and share the spoils.

Inter Lions FC 0 defeated by Hills United FC 7

Hills United FC were 7-0 winners against Inter Lions FC down at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

It was a professional performance from the league leaders against a gallant Inter Lions FC side. Elin Rosenberg Cemazar who coach Alan Tasses rated as the best player on the park made it 1-0 in the 2nd minute then an own goal from Inter Lions FC gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Inter Lions FC hung in gamely for 70 minutes but got tired which allowed Hills United FC find the back of the net several times. Jess Wootton added the third in the 71st minute then Isabella Sciberras scored in the 74th minute for 4-0.

Hills United FC captain Aisling Davidson tallied in the 79th and 89th minute to make it 6-0 for the visitors. Sciberras popped up to get her scored of the game in the 92nd minute to finish off the 7-0 scoreline.

Nepean FC 1 defeated by Sutherland Strikers FC 4

Sutherland Strikers FC won 4-1 against Nepean FC in their game at Cook Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Strikers got back in the winner’s circle with their third win of the campaign in their travels west. Grace Considine made it 1-0 for Sutherland Strikers FC in the 25th minute with a finish inside the box for the lead at the break.

They pushed further ahead in the second half with Sydney FC star Kirsty Fenton scoring for 2-0 in the 48th minute with an assured finish. Considine made it 3-0 in the 69th minute after another well taken finish then Lucy Johnston confirmed the win making it 4-0 from outside the box.

Nepean FC did get a consolation goal in the 85th minute through substitute Eden Smith for her maiden tally of the season for 4-1. Strikers saw out the game to register the three points and move into 11th on the ladder.
