Round 17 Review – League One Women’s

Round 17 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was another action-packed edition which saw the race for the top four heat up and leaders Hills United FC stretch out their lead to the chasing pack.
There were six games to review including the Match of the Round between Blacktown Spartans FC and Inter Lions FC.

Match of the Round: Blacktown Spartans FC 0 defeated by Inter Lions FC 4
Inter Lions FC won 4-0 against Blacktown Spartans FC down at Blacktown Football Park on Sunday evening.
Blacktown Spartans FC were blown away in the first half by the barrage of Inter Lions FC goals and didn’t recover. Their best chances fell to Jasmin Fisher from free-kicks and Melina Visser in the second half.
The Lions roared to a three goal lead at the break and never looked back. Hannah Charak highlighted the win with a hat-trick while Jenny Hughes produced a spectacular chip to get on the scoresheet.
Blacktown Spartans FC and Inter Lions FC strode onto Blacktown Football Park to battle for three points.
The Spartans were the first side to create a chance. Jasmin Fisher whipped in a free-kick which was claimed well by Inter Lions FC keeper Ashley Mcintyre.
Inter Lions FC started to string some passes together and tested Blacktown Spartans FC custodian Ella Stewart with Kiara Coscia’s strike.
The Lions made it 1-0 in the 14th minute through Hannah Charak. She held possession then curled an effort into the bottom corner.
Fisher tried to produce something from a free-kick again. This one was hit with venom but again went right to Mcintyre.
The hosts continued to push for an equaliser. Melina Visser against her old side dragged her shot wide of the post.
Inter Lions FC doubled their delight in the 27th minute. The ball fell again to Charak who didn’t need a second invitation to get her second and make it 2-0.
Quickly, Inter Lions FC made it 3-0 with a splendid effort. It was a ball over the top which found Jenny Hughes in stride and she chipped it home in the 31st minute.
Danielle Keller tried to spark something for her side. She turned well past the defender and hooked a shot towards goal.
The Spartans tried to get back into the game in the second half. They had a few corners which were delivered and swept away by the Lions defence.
The Lions kept up their work after the break. Charak was threaded through and fired into the top of the net for 4-0 in the 60th minute.
They were hungry to add further goals. The ball bounced around in the area before Hughes swung a leg at it.
Next, the Lions went close from a corner. Defender Belinda Anderson-Sharp craned her neck but Stewart was able to collect.
Lions substitute Elena Antic tried to get in on the scoring act. She drove forward and unfurled a strike then midfielder Ella Martins tried her luck in the 78thminute.
Visser continued to be a nuisance for the Lions defence. She slipped into the area and her low shot was repelled by Mcintyre.
Martins made another surge forward for Inter Lions FC in the 88th minute and drew another fine save from Spartans FC keeper Stewart.
Blacktown Spartans FC had a late chance to get on the scoresheet from an indirect free-kick. It was rolled to Lili Rosandic who thumped it over the bar.
Post match, Blacktown Spartans FC coach Lachlan Raymond remained positive about his side’s performance:
“In fairness, Inter were effective in front of goal but I don’t it was as bad as the score indicated with Paris Vinuya and Melina Visser being strong up front. I think we’ve spread out the chances lately and shown improvement.” said Raymond.
For Inter Lions FC coach John Di Biase, he reflected on a strong performance which showed the growth of his side:
“I think the girls stuck to the plan today and it was the first time in a while we had a 90-minute performance which we know we’re capable of doing. The big thing for us keeping our heads in games and good that we did that tonight.” said Di Biase.

South Coast Flame FC 1 defeated SD Raiders FC 0
South Coast Flame FC won 1-0 against SD Raiders FC down at Sir Ian McLennan Park on Saturday evening.
The Flame made it three wins on the bounce and put them right in the hunt for a maiden finals appearance this season. South Coast Flame FC opened the scoring from a set piece with Abigail Jordan thumping home a header for 1-0 in the 24th minute.
SD Raiders FC surged forward in the second half looking to get something from this game and keep their chase of leaders Hills United FC alive. They were blunted by the Flame and drop points for the second week in a row.
Nepean FC 0 defeated by Bankstown City Lions FC 3
Bankstown City Lions FC won 3-0 against Nepean FC in their game at Cook Park on Sunday afternoon.
It was the perfect bounce back for the Lions after their late defeat to South Coast Flame FC last weekend in the Match of the Round. Kahtia Bedano opened the scoring in the 16th minute for 1-0 then doubled her delight in the 29th minute to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Lions weren’t going to surrender this weekend and ensured that the three points would be coming back to Jensen Park in the 67th minute. Captain Stephanie Ambrose fired home to make it 3-0 to confirm the result.
Marconi Stallions FC 3 defeated Blacktown City FC 0
Marconi Stallions FC were 3-0 winners against Blacktown City FC at Marconi Stadium #2 on Sunday afternoon.
The Stallions secure back-to-backs wins in this contest which moves them into second spot on the League One Women’s ladder. It also cements them inside the top four and maintains their trend of scoring goals for fun.
Blacktown City FC had an improved performance from the earlier fixture and will take those positives into next weekend. They also added another point to their total in their mid-week 0-0 draw against Central Coast Mariners FC.
Central Coast Mariners FC 0 defeated by Sutherland Strikers FC 1
Sutherland Strikers FC won 1-0 against Central Coast Mariners FC down at Pluim Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Strikers continue their pattern of getting a win after losing the previous week and maintain their surge up the League One Women’s ladder. It was a tactical battle between these two sides and went into the break at 0-0.
Chances were at a premium in a closely fought second half but Lucy Johnson broke the deadlock for Sutherland Strikers FC in the 78th minute. Her strike from inside the box making it 1-0 for the visitors and sending them back down the highway with three points.
This result puts a dent in Central Coast Mariners FC top four hopes and keeps them on the outside looking in. They did collect a point in their midweek 0-0 draw against Blacktown City FC in their catch-up fixture.
Hills United FC 3 defeated Camden Tigers FC 0
Leaders Hills United FC won 3-0 against Camden Tigers FC at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday night.
The competition front runners took their lead to 11 points after their 14th win of the campaign on their home turf. Striker Isabella Sciberras made it 1-0 for Hills United FC in the 4th minute followed by club appearance leader Bianca Galayini finding the back of the net in the 7th minute for a 2-0 lead at the break.
Hills United FC added a third goal in the 63rd minute through Isabella Sciberras’ second goal of the contest which gives her 13th tally for the season. They saw out the rest of the game in a professional manner to move a step closer to some silverware.
