Round 22 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was another fantastic weekend of action which saw the finals race continue to hot up headed into the final month of the season.

Let’s get onto the review!

Match of the Round: Hills United FC 1 drew with Sutherland Strikers FC 1

Hills United FC and Sutherland Strikers FC had a 1-1 draw at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday afternoon.

The league leaders were left frustrated after not taking all three points in this contest to move closer to the title. Gemma Woolley gave them a lead in the 38th minute to make it 1-0 before they were pegged back in the second half.

For Sutherland Strikers FC this sent an icon of the club Chantelle Symes off with a well-earned point away from home. It was a spectacular striker from Kathleen McParland in the 69th minute which made it 1-1.

Hills United FC and Sutherland Strikers FC walked onto Valentine Sports Park for an important clash tonight.

It was a tense start to the game with both teams trying to find control. Lucy Johnson had a lot touches early for Sutherland Strikers FC.

The first chance came from a set piece. It fell to Amie Mastrop inside the box and her header looped over.

Sutherland Strikers FC found their rhythm soon after which allowed Dianne Wilson to whip a shot wide of the left post.

The Strikers were awarded an indirect free-kick after back pass. It was laid off to Johnson who arrowed wide.

Next, Gemma Woolley wriggled into space and put her shot right at Sutherland Strikers FC keeper Chantelle Symes.

Bianca Galayini went closest to breaking the deadlock. She found space inside the box and crashed an effort against the left post.

The Strikers had another chance from the set piece in the 37th minute. Johnson curled in the free-kick right to Hills United FC custodian Nicola Simmons.

Hills United FC made it 1-0 in the 38th minute. Isabella Sciberras threaded through Woolley who finished well into the bottom corner.

The game remained a tactical battle in the second half, as both sides didn’t want to concede an inch across the park.

Cemazar tried to extend Hills United FC’s lead in the 65th minute. She found space and fired wide of the mark.

Sutherland Strikers FC levelled in the 69th minute from a world class strike. Kathleen McParland took a touch quickly then drilled home for 1-1.

Trying to restore the advantage, Monique Holder tried her luck from range and it fizzed past Symes post.

Next, Hills United FC tried their luck from a set piece. Cemazar floated in the free-kick which went wide.

Sciberras tried to be the architect for Hills United FC again. She weaved through the Strikers defence then laid it off to substitute Rachel Glendenning to shoot wide.

The game opened up in the late stages. Hills United FC earned a corner which saw captain Aisling Davidson nod over.

There was one final twist in the tale. Sciberras found some space inside the box and landed her shot on the roof of the net.

Neither side could find a winner in the four minutes of stoppage time and the game finished 1-1 between two quality sides.

Post match, Hills United FC coach Alan Tasses reflected on a frustrating result for his side in their chase for the title:

“It was a frustrating game, they have signed some talented players and gave us a good contest. We had our chances but weren’t clinical like usual which didn’t help. Now, we move forward to hopefully three points next week.” said Tasses.

For departing Sutherland Strikers FC custodian Chantelle Symes, she looked back on a quality contest between the two sides:

“I thought it was a quality contest between two sides full of heart in the game. We showed that we had grit and were unlucky not to get all three. It was a superb striker from [Kathleen] McParland which helped us tonight.” said Symes.

Sutherland Strikers FC head coach Hanif Verjani added that “Symes has been a huge asset to the club and is an icon of the club.”
