Football NSW held its first Junior Development League (JDL) Coaching Course in preparation for the 2026 season this past weekend at Valentine Sports Park.

The course was led by Football NSW Technical Advisor Gareth Long and marks a significant milestone in the continued development of coaching standards for young players across the state.

Launched in 2024 as part of Football NSW’s JDL Benchmarking and Standards initiative, the course is specifically designed to equip coaches with the tools and knowledge to create the most positive, child-friendly environments possible for young footballers. The JDL Coaching Course forms a key component of Football NSW’s commitment to raising the quality of coaching within the 9–12 age group, a critical period in a player’s development.

Gareth Long praised the atmosphere and engagement of the participating coaches over the weekend.

“There was a real buzz around the group. The coaches brought an incredible energy and showed genuine care for the development of their players. It’s clear they’re committed to creating environments where kids can love the game and grow through it.”

Chris Adams, Football NSW Coach Education Manager, also spoke about the strategic importance of the course.

“This course plays a vital role in our coach education framework. By providing targeted, specialist education for those working in this key age range, we’re helping lay the foundation for long-term player development and a better football experience for kids across NSW.”

The success of the inaugural course sets the tone for future sessions, with further JDL Coaching Courses scheduled for October and November.
