Match of the Round: Fraser Park FC 2-1 Bankstown United FC

Fraser Park showed their strength at home, coming away with a 2-1 victory over Bankstown United FC in a tight match.

Bankstown started the match strongly and looked to dominate the opening exchanges of the match.

Fraser Park had a big opportunity at the other end from a corner, the ball finding the back of the net off Bankstown’s Alejandro Salgueira to give Fraser Park a 1-0 lead.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 19th minute through a strong move down the right flank, the ball finding the back of the net off the boot of George Grillakis to give Fraser Park a 2-0 lead.

Fraser Park had a few more chances in the first half to add to their lead but could not find the back of the net, while Bankstown also had their chances.

Bankstown responded in the 33rd minute through Mitchell Cross, who scored a goal of the season contender to ensure Bankstown went into the sheds just 2-1 down at the break.

Bankstown lost both Mitchell Cross and Hassan Kamberovic in the second half due to injury.

The second half saw an arm wrestle as both sides looked for more goals, both goalkeepers saving shots onto the crossbar and post to prevent further additions to the scoreline.

Neither side was able to find a goal in the second half, Fraser Park holding on for a strong 2-1 home win over Bankstown.

The win for Fraser Park saw them remain a perfect two-from-two to start the season, while the loss for Bankstown saw them unable to back up their opening round win.

Fraser Park will hunt a third-straight win when they travel to take on Bonnyrigg White Eagles FC, while Bankstown will hope to respond when they travel to face Nepean FC.

Inner West Hawks FC 1-2 Nepean FC

Nepean FC continued their strong start to the season with a comeback 2-1 away win over Inner West Hawks FC.

The Hawks started the match strongly, with Peter Yannopolous hitting the post two minutes in from a save from Nepean goalkeeper Brendan Allen off a low-driven cross from Joshua Lazzaro.

Inner West took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Hesan Soufi played a through ball in behind for Yannopoulos, who chipped Allen and found the back of the net for the hosts.

Nepean found the equaliser in the second minute of first-half stoppage time after the Hawks failed to clear the ball from a corner, Toby Witjes slotting the ball home to restore parity at 1-1 at half-time.

Nepean took control of the midfield in the second half and found the eventual winner in the 75th minute when a long ball over the top from their goalkeeper Allen saw Witjes go through on goal, where he slotted the ball home for a 2-1 lead.

The Hawks missed a golden chance to level the match late when they were awarded a penalty, but Sidhya Malhotra could not convert from the spot, Nepean running out 2-1 winners.

The loss for the Hawks saw them lose back-to-back matches to start the season, while the win for Nepean saw them do the inverse and remain perfect.

The match started with high intensity, Camden striking the crossbar and the post a total of three times in the first half, while Central Coast also tested the Tigers’ defence.

After the break, Camden took the lead in the 54th minute when Dean Mugridge took advantage of their high possession count and found the back of the net with a deflected shot for a 1-0 lead.

Parramatta showed their ascendency in the opening 30 minutes of the match, accentuated by Travis Oughtred getting on the end of a ball and sending Dunbar goalkeeper Benjamin Wrigley the wrong way with a deflected finish in the 29th minute for a 1-0 lead.

From there, however, Dunbar got back into the match and found the equaliser in the 35th minute when a ball was sent into the box to Samuel Tzanakes, who found space between two defenders, pivoted and slotted the ball home low to level the match at 1-1.

Three minutes later, Dunbar took the lead when a throw-in saw a 50/50 challenge fall to Paul Gautier; he squared the ball to Tzanakes in a two-on-one situation, where Tzanakes finished well to give Dunbar a 2-1 lead.

Tzanakes completed his 12-minute, first-half hat-trick in the second half of stoppage time when he squeezed through two defenders at the top of the box, took a few touches and slotted the ball home to give Dunbar a 3-1 half-time lead.

Both sides had chances in the second half, but Parramatta pulled a goal back in the 90th minute when Sunny Chang struck a free kick into the top corner of the goal; despite a grandstand finish, Dunbar came away with all three points in a 3-2 win.

The win for Dunbar was their first of the season as they responded from their opening round defeat, while for Parramatta their first match of the season resulted in a loss for them.
