Match of the Round
Blacktown Spartans FC 0 Camden Tigers FC 0
Blacktown Spartans FC drew 0–0 with Camden Tigers FC at Blacktown Football Park on Sunday in a tense, defensive masterclass. The Spartans earned another point but had multiple chances to claim all three, with Gemma Woolley and Helena Daniele coming closest in a match dominated by disciplined defending.
For the Tigers, it was a hard-earned first point and clean sheet of the season. Charlotte Taylor had their best chance to break the deadlock in the first half, but Spartans goalkeeper Alexis Tan was equal to the task.
“It was definitely a tough game. It was good to get a point. I thought we could have done better though. Credit to Camden who defended well tonight, but we didn’t take our chances in the game,” said Spartans coach Andrew Ienna.
The match started as a tightly contested midfield battle. In the ninth minute, Woolley stepped up for a free kick but smashed it into the wall. Camden responded with their own set piece, Ellie Lontis delivering a dangerous ball that Tan claimed confidently.
Camden continued to frustrate the Spartans, limiting Woolley’s chances, while Logan Garard and Danielle Bishop combined down the left to release Charlotte Taylor, whose shot drifted narrowly wide. Just before halftime, Woolley broke free but ballooned her effort over the bar.
The second half saw intensity rise. Peyton Crye tested Tigers keeper Samantha Fulwood with a shaped effort, while Garard’s tame shot was easily collected by Tan. Set pieces again became focal points, with Sheiden Jabour and Woolley forcing stops from Fulwood. Substitutes Rita Boateng and Makayla Crouch brought a late spark, with Crouch seeing her effort drift wide.
Helena Daniele produced a dipping shot that Fulwood tipped over the bar, keeping the score at 0–0 until the final whistle.
Camden Tigers coach Jamie Jones reflected on the point:
“We made it into a bit of a battle and held our own. We’re getting better as the team continues to gel. It was good to get some minutes for Kylie Ledbrook and I think we’re starting to come together as a team.”
South Coast Flame FC 3 v Inter Lions FC 1
South Coast Flame FC defeated Inter Lions FC 3–1 at Sir Ian McLennan Oval on Saturday night to maintain their position atop the League One Women’s ladder.
Emily Kostovski opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Alexis Malizis doubled the advantage in the 23rd. Inter Lions pulled one back through Kiara Coscia in the 41st minute, setting up a tense finale to the first half. But the Flame quickly restored their two-goal lead when Cristina Barraza scored in the 47th minute. Despite Coscia hitting the crossbar and creating further chances, the Flame held firm to secure all three points.
St George FC 1 Blacktown City FC 1
St George FC drew 1–1 with Blacktown City FC at Barton Park.
The Saints earned their first points of the season after a scoreless first half. Aya Seino broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with her fifth goal of the campaign, but Layla Hamdan responded for Blacktown City just five minutes later. Neither team could find a winner in the closing stages.
SD Raiders FC 4 Marconi Stallions FC 2
SD Raiders FC defeated Marconi Stallions FC 4–2 in a high-energy derby at Marconi Stadium.
Youngster Markie Robinson opened the scoring for the Raiders in the 23rd minute, but Pene Bonovas levelled for Marconi from the penalty spot in the 45th. The second half belonged to the visitors, with Abigail Boag scoring in the 56th and 83rd minutes and Taiana Almeida heading home in the 59th. Erinn Cleghorn netted a stoppage-time consolation for Marconi in a thrilling finish.
Nepean FC 1 v Newcastle Jets FC 1
Nepean FC drew 1–1 with Newcastle Jets FC at Jamison Park.
The Jets dropped their first points of the season. Mackenzie Preston-Poole gave Newcastle the lead in the 50th minute, but Ruth Wigley equalised for Nepean in the 65th minute, sparking a tense finale that ended in a share of the spoils.
Sutherland Strikers FC 4 v Bankstown City Lions FC 0
Sutherland Strikers FC defeated Bankstown City Lions FC 1–0 at Jensen Park.
Ella Munro scored the decisive goal in the 57th minute, continuing her scoring streak, and the Strikers held firm to earn their second win of the season after a hard-fought contest.
Central Coast Mariners FC had the bye this round.
